Ladbrokes Tip: Colts and geldings out of the Canonbury Stakes often target the $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes that autumn.
Held in late January each year as part of the Expressway Stakes Day card – headlined by the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) and also featuring the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) for two-year-old fillies – the Canonbury Stakes is a Group 3 sprint run over 1100m.
Contested at set weights plus penalties, the event is open only to two-year-old colts and geldings and serves as an early Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival springboard for juveniles targeting the $5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).
The race was first run in 1930 and has held Group 3 status since 2015.
Throughout history just three horses have completed the Canonbury Stakes – Golden Slipper Stakes double: Fine And Dandy (1958), Sebring (2007) and Vancouver (2015).
Currently offering $160,000 in prize money, the Canonbury is named after Canonbury House in Sydney’s Darling Point built in 1911 and purchased by the Australian Jockey Club (AJC) in 1919.
The latest edition of the Canonbury Stakes in 2022 ran on Saturday January 29th, 2022 at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse and was won by Queenslander Best Of Bordeaux by nearly five lengths.

Canonbury Stakes Betting
Canonbury Stakes betting opens at bookies around the country after the field of final acceptors and barriers are out the Wednesday of race week.
Young male horses that are resuming and run well fresh, proven Rosehill performers, sprinters with previous form over the 1100m distance and runners coming off any earlier Black-Type Sydney assignments sit high up the Canonbury Stakes odds.
Many two-year-olds may be on debut in the Canonbury Stakes, so those with strong lead-up trials are often at shorter odds.

Canonbury Stakes Tips
Good Canonbury Stakes tips include looking for in-form Sydney runners that have previous Group form, ran well last time out if not on debut, are drawn well in the Rosehill race and have winning form over at least 1000m.
Another top Canonbury Stakes betting tip is to take the winner to finish in the money next start in another Golden Slipper lead-up such as the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1200m) against the fillies or the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) for colts and geldings.
Prague (2021) was the last horse to complete the Canonbury Stakes – Pago Pago Stakes double.
2022 Canonbury Stakes Tips
Our insider Canonbury Stakes tips 2022 will be published below once the field is confirmed and betting markets released on the Group 3 sprint.
- To Win: #4 Great Barrier Reef ($1.50 at time of publish)
No value in the Canonbury now after a trio of scratchings including our original tip Zambezi River. Waller’s debutant Great Barrier Reef is odds-on and with just four rivals to beat, he’s looking pretty close to a sure thing. Good draw, James McDonald is a star and this young son of I Am Invincible could turn out to be the same starting here.
