English Football League (EFL)

The English Football League (EFL) is a professional-soccer (football) competition that takes place as England’s second division football season and is popular with sports fans and punters right around the globe.

Divided up between three separate leagues, the EFL is the oldest football competition in the world, having once held the title as England’s top flight league from the 19th century right up until 1992.

Following the 1992 season, 22 clubs left the EFL and formed what is now known as the Premier League. The three leagues below the Premier League are now known as the “Championship”, “League One” and “League Two”.

The entire EFL is made up of 72 teams – 70 from England and two from Wales (Swansea City and Newport County). All three leagues work on a promotion/relegation basis, with the top three teams in the Championship eligible for promotion to the Premier League at the end of each season.

Last seasons Premier League relegation’s included Swansea City, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion, while former League One teams Cardiff City, Fulham and Championship winners Wolverhampton Wolves, were promoted to the top flight.
