The Frances Tressady Stakes is a Group 3 race for fillies and mares conducted at Flemington Racecourse in late February on Black Caviar Lightning Day. The event was previously held later on as part of the Australian Guineas Day card at the same track before being moved to an earlier autumn slot for 2023.

A key support act on the card headlined by the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m), the Frances Tressady Stakes takes place over 1400m and is run at set weights plus penalties.
Offering $200,000 in prize money the event was first run in 1975 and is open only to fillies and mares.
The race is named in honour of* former star filly Frances Tressady who claimed the 1923 Victoria Derby – Victorian Oaks double before a fifth over the two miles in the Melbourne Cup.
*In 2023 the race name was changed to the Tony Bourke Memorial in honour of the legendary Age racing chief writer dubbed “The King”, Tony Bourke, who passed away aged 81 earlier in February that year.
The event also serves as a lead-up into bigger and better autumn races including Sydney’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) held at Rosehill in March.
Typhoon Tracy (2009) and Aloha (2011) are the latest mares to have completed the Frances Tressady Stakes – Coolmore Classic interstate double.
Typhoon Tracy (2009) is one of the most famous Tressady Stakes winners throughout history winning the event at just her fourth career start. The mare, who would sadly die in 2012 following the birth of her first foal, went on to win six subsequent Group 1 races.
The latest edition of the Frances Tressady Stakes ran on Saturday February 17, 2024 on Flemington’s Black Caviar Lightning Day card and was won by the in-form Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Revolutionary Miss ($5) for her fourth Black-Type victory.
