The race is named in honour of* former star filly Frances Tressady who claimed the 1923 Victoria Derby – Victorian Oaks double before a fifth over the two miles in the Melbourne Cup.

*In 2023 the race name was changed to the Tony Bourke Memorial in honour of the legendary Age racing chief writer dubbed “The King”, Tony Bourke, who passed away aged 81 earlier in February that year.

The event also serves as a lead-up into bigger and better autumn races including Sydney’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) held at Rosehill in March.

Typhoon Tracy (2009) and Aloha (2011) are the latest mares to have completed the Frances Tressady Stakes – Coolmore Classic interstate double.

Typhoon Tracy (2009) is one of the most famous Tressady Stakes winners throughout history winning the event at just her fourth career start. The mare, who would sadly die in 2012 following the birth of her first foal, went on to win six subsequent Group 1 races.

Small and open field but have landed on Wrote To Arataki at an attractive price to win Saturday’s first Group event at Flemington. Matthew Williams’ six-year-old daughter of Wrote is a previous Flemington winner and has fitness on her side having brushed off the cobwebs with an eye-catching third fresh in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine – the traditional lead-up to this. She was 3.5 lengths beaten at Sandown but will appreciate getting back to Flemington. Her first-up performance was an improved effort off her later spring runs when unplaced in a couple of Melbourne Group 2s behind some pretty nice types. Hasn’t won since the Group 2 Tristarc at Caulfield back in 2023 and has been very lightly raced since but think she is getting back to her best and can surprise a few at a price.
