Maribyrnong Plate is a key support act on Melbourne Cup Day on the first Tuesday of November!
The Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate is a 1000m sprint race held at Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday of November annually as part of the iconic Melbourne Cup Day card at headquarters.
The meeting is of course headlined by the world-famous Group 1 $8.41 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) and also features the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m).
A set weights race offering $200,000, the Maribyrnong Plate is open only to two-year-old horses and many make their racing debut in front of 100,000 plus spectators on Australia’s biggest day of racing.
The time-honoured Maribyrnong Plate has been run and won since 1871 and is currently sponsored by Darley.
The latest edition of the Maribyrnong Plate took place on Tuesday November 7, 2023 on Lexus Melbourne Cup Day 2023 and saw Zac Purton steer the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Dublin Down ($11) to an upset win.

Sticking with a proven early winner, this James Cummings-trained Brazen Beau colt won his debut at Bendigo in style posting a 1.5 length over the 1000m with 58kg a fortnight ago. Big plus getting James McDonald on the saddle second-up as he heads to the big city. Confidence of that successful first run, drawn well in gate six, same weight and distance so if he handles the straight he can win again here.
