Ladbrokes Tip: The South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes serves as a potential lead-up to the spring’s Group 1 VRC Derby in Melbourne.
The South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes – often known as simply the SA Sires’ or Sires’ Produce Stakes (SAJC) – is a Group 3 race held in Adelaide at Morphettville Parks Racecourse on a Saturday in mid to late July each winter racing season in South Australia.
It was previously contested in May before being moved to a later time slot ahead of the 2024 edition.
The set weights event is hosted by the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC), currently offers $150,000 in prize money and is contested over 1400m by a field of mainly local two-year-old horses at the start of their careers.
Inaugurated back in 1945, the SA Sires’ Produce Stakes held Group 2 status for a stint between 1979 and 1991 before being downgraded to its current Group 3 level in 1992.
A number of class runners have taken out the race throughout history, most famously Rebel Raider in 2008 who won that year’s Group 1 Victoria Derby in Melbourne over the Cup Carnival at 100/1!
The next edition of the South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes takes place on Saturday, July 20th, 2024 in SA.
