The Standish Handicap is a popular Group summer sprint race run and won in mid-January at Melbourne’s famous Flemington Racecourse.
Previously held on New Year’s Day, the Standish Handicap now takes place in Victoria on the same day Queensland hosts it’s $13.5 million Magic Millions Race Day at the Gold Coast headlined by the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic and $3 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.
Run down the ‘Straight Six’ at Headquarters, the 1200m showdown offers $250,000 in prize money.
The event was first run right back in 1884, is a handicap race and gained its current Group 3 status for the first time in 1980.
The Standish Handicap is named after former VRC Chairman and former police Chief Commissioner during the Ned Kelly era, Captain Frederick Standish (1824-1883). Standish is also credited as coming up with the concept and name of the now iconic Melbourne Cup race.
It is now part of Melbourne’s Summer Sprint Series running as the third event in the four-race series. The other races in the series are the Listed Kensington Stakes at Flemington, Listed Christmas Stakes at Caulfield and the Group 2 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley.
The Standish Handicap winner is now also exempt from that autumn’s Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) held at the same track and distance in March.
The latest edition of the Standish Handicap ran down the Flemington straight on Saturday January 13, 2024 and was won in dominant fashion by the short-priced favourite Sghirripa ($2.05F).
