First contested in 1901, the time-honoured Strickland Stakes is a Group 3 ace held in late June during the Perth Winter Racing Carnival. Contested at Belmont Racecourse – which is the other key Perth track outside of Ascot – the event is contested over 2000m and offers a total of $200,000 in prize money.

The weight-for-age race has been contested during a host of varying times including starting out as a summer racing event, but has held it’s current June positioning since 2011 when also increased from 1800m to 2000m.

It serves as a nice next-up options for graduates out of the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) and Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m). Fuchsia Bandana (2015), Scales Of Justice (2016) and Material Man (2018) are the latest horses to complete the Hyperion Stakes – Strickland Stakes double. Material Man also won that season’s Belmont Sprint completing a rare treble. Material Man also returned to become a dual Strickland Stakes winner on non-successive years with his 2000 success.

Many top Perth horses have won the Strickland Stakes over the years including in recent times Mr Moet (2012), Scales Of Justice (2017), and Galaxy Star (2019).

The latest edition of the Strickland Stakes ran on Saturday June 15th, 2024 in Perth over the winter carnival and saw Let’s Galahvant ($10) finish strongly to upset the odds-on favourite Western Empire.
