The 2025 Sunline Stakes results went the way of Danny O’Brien’s Shamexpress four-year-old front runner Grinzinger Belle ($4F) who saluted for the punters second-up in an impressive 2.75 length romp home having strung out the field to run her rivals ragged in the style of the event’s namesake Sunline.

The Sunline Stakes is a Group 2 support race run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on William Reid Stakes Day in late March during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) for the sprinters with the Sunline Stakes contested over a mile.

The other key event on the card in 2024 is the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m).

The 1600m feature is open to fillies and mares and contested under weight for age conditions.

A total of $300,000 is on offer in the race including $180,000 to the Sunline Stakes winner and connections.

The Sunline Stakes is named in honour of champion New Zealand-bred thoroughbred Sunline who won 32 of her 48 career starts and was the highest earning racehorse in the world during her time. Her most notable wins included dual Cox Plate victories in 1999 and 2000 as well as the Hong Kong Mile (2000) overseas.

Sunline Stakes odds are usually dominated by the best performing mares coming out of Flemington’s Matron Stakes held a fortnight earlier over a mile with the Matron Stakes – Sunline Stakes double last completed by Spanish Reef (2018) who also won the 2019 Matron Stakes before a second in that year’s Sunline Stakes, Sirileo Miss in 2023, and Eternal Flame in 2024. 

Good lead-up Melbourne form during the autumn is the key factor in the markets and the latest Sunline Stakes winners to jump at double figures were Nakaaya ($10 in 2011), Consensus ($26 in 2019), Mamzelle Tess ($21 in 2020), and Shout The Bar ($10 in 2022).

In 2021 the Sunline Stakes winner Quantum Mechanic backed up from a second in that year’s Matron Stakes results.

The 2022 Sunline Stakes winner Shout The Bar improved on her lead-up last (8th) in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes to score an upset at $10.

The 2025 Sunline Stakes winner Grinzinger Belle improved on her lead-up fourth fresh at Caulfield in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) on Blue Diamond Stakes Day.

Quintessa is the early market mover in Sunline Stakes betting at The Valley on Saturday and I’m happy to follow the money trail on this Group 1 winning daughter of Shamus Award. The Kiwi expat won an elite level over the mile back home in NZ last January and has the class to beat this field and returning to winning form now. She was runner-up by the barest of margins in a thriller in this race 12 months ago before being far from disgraced when fourth in the ATC Oaks. Has won just once down under to date in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes last autumn at Caulfield but looks well placed to add a second Aussie victory on her CV here. Was out weighted when unplaced with 60kg fresh two back before improving to run third, albeit beaten by quite a margin, by Coeur Volante in the Group 3 Mannerism on Blue Diamond Day. Won a subsequent Cranbourne trial so has residual fitness with the month between runs and she handles this track. Dream run likely from gate four. Can win.
