Ladbrokes Tip: The Matron Stakes is a top lead-up race into the Sunline Stakes.

The Sunline Stakes is a Group 2 support race run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on William Reid Stakes Day in late March during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) for the sprinters with the Sunline Stakes contested over a mile.

The other key event on the card in 2024 is the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m).

The 1600m feature is open to fillies and mares and contested under weight for age conditions.

A total of $300,000 is on offer in the race including $180,000 to the Sunline Stakes winner and connections.

The Sunline Stakes is named in honour of champion New Zealand-bred thoroughbred Sunline who won 32 of her 48 career starts and was the highest earning racehorse in the world during her time. Her most notable wins included dual Cox Plate victories in 1999 and 2000 as well as the Hong Kong Mile (2000) overseas.

The latest edition of the Sunline Stakes ran on Saturday March 23, 2024 on William Reid Stakes Day and was won by the Michael Kent-trained four-year-old Eternal Flame ($9.50).

The Michael Kent-trained four-year-old Sacred Falls mare Eternal Flame ($9.50) made it back-to-back autumn wins coming off a Group 3 Matron Stakes victory to lead down the home straight and take out the 2024 Sunline Stakes results in a stylish upset.

Sunline Stakes odds are usually dominated by the best performing mares coming out of Flemington’s Matron Stakes held a fortnight earlier over a mile with the Matron Stakes – Sunline Stakes double last completed by Spanish Reef (2018) who also won the 2019 Matron Stakes before a second in that year’s Sunline Stakes, Sirileo Miss in 2023, and Eternal Flame in 2024. 

Good lead-up Melbourne form during the autumn is the key factor in the markets and the latest Sunline Stakes winners to jump at double figures were Nakaaya ($10 in 2011), Consensus ($26 in 2019), Mamzelle Tess ($21 in 2020), and Shout The Bar ($10 in 2022).

Sunline Stakes betting markets open on the Wednesday before the race after the final acceptances and barrier draw are out.

The Sunline Stakes race field attracts a host of good fillies and mares with form over a mile or further, many coming out of the Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) over the same distance at Flemington.

The latest horses to complete the Matron Stakes – Sunline Stakes double are Noble Protector (2015), Spanish Reef (2018), Sirileo Miss (2023), and Eternal Flame (2024).

Earlier in 2014 Text’n Hurley ran second in the Schweppervescence Trophy (Matron Stakes) before her Sunline Stakes win, while Bippo No Bungus crossed third and second in the same two races respectively.

More recently, in 2017 I’m A Star won the Sunline Stakes on the back of a lead-up win in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.

In 2021 the Sunline Stakes winner Quantum Mechanic backed-up from a second in that year’s Matron Stakes results.

The 2022 Sunline Stakes winner Shout The Bar improved on her lead-up last (8th) in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes to score an upset at $10.

Mark Walker could be in for a huge day at Moonee Valley on Saturday saddling-up a host of livewire favourites including Campionessa in the Sunline. This six-year-old Contributer mare has her first look at the track but is in top form coming off a lead-up win in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield. Only a narrow margin on the line there, but she’s got class as a Group 1 winner back in New Zealand. Was strong in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) down under last year running sixth only two lengths beaten, so plenty to suggest she can handle this field. Rails run and fit. Wins.
