Airing on the Nine Network, The Block is an Australian reality series focusing on up to five couples competing against each other to renovate and restyle houses.
Debuting in 2003, the original show was hosted by Jamie Durie, followed by John McGrath in 2004. The show was then reviewed by Nine following its second season, and was axed for six years before returning with Scott Cam as the new host in 2010. Since then, The Block has gone on to run for eight consecutive years.
Popular not only with DIY enthusiasts, the program is also popular with punters. The weekly elimination style format is a similar concept to other reality shows, while punters can also bet on the outright winner right throughout the season.
Premise
The location of the show is usually located in a former apartment block, hotel or motel in New South Wales of Victoria.
Typically, The Block features four or five couples with renovation experience. They are challenged with the task of refurbishing one of the apartments in the complex over a 12 week period with a budget of up to $100,000.
After the renovation period, the apartments are then auctioned off, with each couple receiving a profit if they achieve a sale above the reserve price.
