The Warra 2023

The Warra is a new Special Conditions event run and won at Kembla Grange Racecourse in mid to late November at the tail end of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

A handicap race with no age or sex restrictions, The Warra took place for the first time in 2021 and is conducted by the Illawarra Turf Club.

It is held on the same day as the $1 million The Gong (1600m) and is a 1000m sprint for short-distance specialists.

The Warra offers $300,000 in prize money and makes a nice target for sprinters that may be down in grade off a Group 1 run in either Sydney or Melbourne earlier in the spring.

This spring’s edition of The Warra ran on 2023 at Kembla Grange and was won by the Michael Freedman-trained Insurrection ($6).

The Warra Betting

Betting on The Warra is led by in-form spring sprinters coming off a good lead-up campaign in similar distance / class races.

Proven short-distance horses with a good 1000m record, any local hopes with previous form at Kembla Grange and the quality Group 1 runners down in grade dominate The Warra betting.

There are a number of key lead-up races that impact The Warra betting markets including the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley in September.

The inaugural favourite in The Warra betting was Malkovich ($2.35 in 2021) who ran a narrow second behind Eleven Eleven ($7.50).

In 2022 Athelric won The Warra at odds of $5, while the favourite Malkovich ($3.40) ran fifth as the beaten top elect for the second straight year.

The Warra 2023 winner Insurrection started at $6 odds.

The Warra Field

The Warra race field features a line-up of quality spring sprinters, many stepping that may be stepping back to 1000m off a run over 1200m or further.

Plenty of horses in The Warra field may also be heading north off a run in a Group race at Flemington over the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Some runners may also be dropping back in distance on the quick back-up out of the previous Saturday’s $1 million The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle.

2023 The Warra Field

The official The Warra 2023 Final Field and Barriers will be announced by Racing NSW the Wednesday of race week and published in full below.

The 2023 The Warra field features a smart line-up of short-distance specialists led in betting by the resuming Kris Lees-trained Russian Revolution four-year-old Brudenell.

2023 The Warra Nominations

The early 2023 The Warra nominations will close on the Monday of race week and the list of potential runners in The Gong Day support act will be available below.

  • To Win: #9 Hard To Say ($12 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Open edition of The Warra but going for value with Hard To Say at double-figures to extend an impressive winning streak. The Exceed And Excel four-year-old from Newcastle has been doing just that winning four on the trot ahead of this. Last start at Randwick over 1100m he saluted by a length with 53kg in a Benchmark 100 on Melbourne Cup Day. Only carries a kilo more here and despite a wide draw has the class to defeat this field especially back in distance.
