Ladbrokes Tip: The Vamos Stakes can serve as a nice autumn lead-up into Adelaide’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes.
The Vamos Stakes is a Group 3 weight-for-age race for fillies and mares taking place during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival on Ladbrokes Launceston Cup Day on a Wednesday in mid to late February.
Racing at the meeting is headlined by the Group 3 $300,000 Ladbrokes Launceston Cup (2400m) with the Vamos Stakes – run over 1400m – the key support act on the card.
Offering $150,000 in prize money, the event was first run in 2007 and has held Group 3 status since 2014.
Many of the female gallopers out of the Vamos Stakes may head to Adelaide to target the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) later that year in May.
The latest edition of the Vamos Stakes ran on Wednesday February 28, 2024 on Ladbrokes Launceston Cup Day and was won in a close finish by Luke Oliver’s Mystic Journey Stakes third place-getter Megamea ($7.50).

Vamos Stakes Betting
Vamos Stakes betting markets traditionally open after the field is announced on the Friday prior to the event running at Launceston Racecourse during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
Fillies and mares with previous Group 3 or higher winning form, those that performed well the previous spring perhaps interstate in similar grade races and the proven Launceston runners traditionally dominate Vamos Stakes odds.
The older mares are usually better fancied in the Vamos Stakes markets with Deroche (2020) the first three-year-old filly to win since 2006.
There was a notable upset in 2022 with Take The Sit winning at Vamos Stakes odds of $14 and again in 2023 with Jaja Chaboogie saluting at $26!
Vamos Stakes Field
The Vamos Stakes race field attracts a quality line-up of fillies and mares each summer/autumn racing season, many of which may have had a lead-up run in Hobart’s Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m) – now Mystic Journey Stakes – a fortnight earlier.
Plenty of mares have won both races over their careers, but Lady Lynette is the last to do the Bow Mistress Trophy – Vamos Stakes double in the same year.
Take The Sit (8th in 2022) and Megamea (3rd in 2024) meanwhile are the latest Vamos Stakes winners to come off an run in the Mystic Journey Stakes (Bow Mistress).
Another potential lead-up is Launceston’s Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Classic held at the same track / distance the Saturday prior and in 2020 Deroche won both races three days apart as the odds-on favourite in each.
Many Vamos Stakes hopefuls have contested previous editions of the race.
Vamos Stakes nominations are taken the Wednesday before race week with final acceptances out on the Friday.

Vamos Stakes Tips
Vamos Stakes tips include backing the proven Group winners in the field, looking for those with a good Launceston strike-rate and avoiding the fillies who have a poor record against the older mares in the event.
Another solid Vamos Stakes betting tip is backing the runners under double-figures with those under $10 in betting dominating the Vamos Stakes results.

- To Win: #4 Yellow Sam ($2.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Happy to stick with the deserving and firming favourite, Yellow Sam, with the Lindsey Smith-trained Ready For Victory mare chasing her third win on the trot. She was strong at Hobart last time out saluting in the Group 3 Mystic Journey Stakes (1200m) by a half-length and is up to the 1400m now which she has a strong record over ( 3:1-1-). First Launceston assignment but in top form, won back in Victoria over this distance two back with plenty of weight (61kg) and is well placed here for jockey Fred Kersley.
Vamos Stakes Form Guide
The Vamos Stakes form guide details all of the must know info like the jockeys, trainers and lead-up form of the fillies and mares in the field along with the official Vamos Stakes barrier draw.
The Vamos Stakes form has gone on to hold up in plenty of stronger grade over the years including in 2021 when the winner Still A Star went on to win that spring’s Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes at Flemington.
Still A Star also ran in that year’s then $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m), which she had already secured a start in prior to her impressive Vamos Stakes victory.
