2015 Len Smith Mile Betting Preview
The Len Smith Mile at Menangle on Sunday is the feature Harness Racing event of the weekend and it will feature the unquestioned superstar of the sport Beautide.
Beautide has had his 2015 season to date disrupted due to injury and he produced the worst performance of his career to date when he finished eighth in the Victoria Cup at Melton on January 31, but he has since returned to his devastating best and will start the Len Smith Mile as a very short favourite.
The Bettors Delight gelding returned to winning form with a comfortable victory in the Menangle Heat of the Inter Dominion on February 14 and he produced a typically dominant effort to win his second straight Inter Dominion Grand Final at Menangle on March 1.
Beautide returned to racing in the Paul Fitzpatrick Free For All at Menangle on April 11 and he never looked like losing after showing plenty of early speed over the 1609 metres of the race – the same distance he will cover in the Len Smith Mile.
The two-time Inter Dominion winner has easily been the best-backed runner in our Len Smith Mile betting market, but there has also been some support for Smolda and Lennytheshark.
Smolda finished a disappointing fifth behind Christen Me at Addington on April 4, but he stamped himself as a potential Len Smith Mile contender with an impressive win in the Group 2 Renshaw Cup (2525m) at Penrith on April 16.
This is a significant drop back in distance and in is doubtful that he has the turn-of-foot required to match it with Beautide in the concluding stages of the race.
Some punters believe that the major threat to Beautide is the popular Lenntytheshark, who has shown this year that he has the ability to compete with the very best in Australia.
Lennytheshark finished second behind Christen Me in the Victoria Cup earlier this year and he went on to win his heat of the Inter Dominion at Melton on February 14, but he could finish no better than sixth in the Inter Dominion Grand Final after driver Chris Alford controversially handed up the lead in the early stages of the race.
The Four Starzz Shark entire returned to racing with a win in the Sheron Park Captain Sandy at Melton on April 18 and he looms as the most likely danger to Beautide in the Len Smith Mile.
The 2015 Len Smith Mile final field is rounded out by Bettor Draw, Heza Thrill, Easy On The Eye, Seel N Print, Monifieth, Blazin N Cullen, Bettor Bet Black, Im Corzin Terror and Freyberg.
