Doomben Cup Day at Doomben on Saturday is the first day of the four day Brisbane Winter Carnival featuring the running of two Group 1s to get the Carnival rolling.
As well as the Group 1 weight for age $650,000 Doomben Cup (2000m) for the middle distance horses, we will also see the running of the Group 1 $500,000 BTC Cup for the sprinters also under weight for age conditions.
Ladbrokes will be offering the top odds throughout the day so let’s see if we can find a few winners on the tough nine race program.
Race 1 – No. 1 Bohemian Lily
We are tipping Gai Waterhouse to get off to a flying start on Doomben Cup Day with her filly Bohemian Lily in the Listed Princess Stakes (2000m). Bohemian Lily is on the improve and Waterhouse gave her a glowing report after she won the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago. The O’Reilly filly will have no trouble handling the extra 200m this week.

Race 3 – No. 1 I’ve Got The Looks
I’ve Got The Looks kept the punters happy with a convincing win in the Listed Silk Stocking (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Anzac Day and will be very hard to beat again in the Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m). The Peter and Paul Snowden trained mare should be given the run of the race by Blake Shinn from the inside gate and her followers look like getting decent odds this week.

Race 4 – No. 1 Laser Hawk
Laser Hawk will appreciate the huge drop in class in the Listed Members’ Handicap (1600m) after running last of thirteen in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on the last day of the Sydney Autumn Carnival. The six year old has been lumped with 60kg but should have no problems handling the impost after winning with 59kg two starts back in the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket (1400m).

Race 5 – No. 2 Wicked Intent
Wicked Intent showed over the Summer months that he is well above average and should have enough early speed to cross over from a wide gate in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m). The Chris Munce trained colt has overcome a minor hoof injury that saw him miss a run in the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast two weeks ago and he is ready to run a mighty race first up at good odds.

Race 9 – No 2. Kuro
Hopefully we can go out on a winning note with Kuro in the last, the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1200m). Kuro has had a slight freshen up and trainer Joe Pride has put the blinkers on for the first time after he finished eighth in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (1200m) at Randwick on day two of ‘The Championships’. The three year old colt has already performed creditably at Group 1 level, running second against the open class sprinters in the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield during the Melbourne Autumn Carnival.
