Caulfield 14th May Betting Plan

Raw Impulse is clearly the class horse in this field and he would be a legitimate Doomben Cup contender if he was sent to Brisbane next weekend. It is tough to see him getting beaten in this race as he has drawn perfectly in barrier five, but there is no edge at his current price of $5. Golden Mane is the main danger, but I am happy to stay out of this race from a betting perspective.

There are plenty of unknowns in this race and I don’t want to get too invested, but there was plenty to like about the last start win of Blue Tycoon and before that he was only beaten by Samara Dancer. The Lindsay Park team is in excellent form and if he is able to maintain that level of performance he will be very tough to beat.

This is far from the strongest race, but both Danestroem and Nadeem Lass are worth a small bet at their current odds. Danestroem finished her last preparation with a string of quality performances and she is capable of a big run fresh. It has been a long time between wins for Nadeem Lass, but this is a drop back in class and she is capable of a high-rating performance on her day.

Lyuba has been in outstanding form since he made his racing debut and the only horse to beat him is Abbey Marie, who went to on to win the Australasian Oaks last start. He is the type of progressive galloper that Darren Weir continues to improve as they get further into their racing careers and he is a horse that I am very keen to follow going forward. I don’t love the booking of Ben Thompson, but it should be a fairly comfortable ride from barrier three.

This is another open race with plenty of winning chances. Volcanic Ash is a talented gelding that has previously won first-up. He has an excellent record over 1400 metres and he doesn’t get into this race too bad at the weights with the three kilograms claim of the in-form Ben Allen. The $6 is more than a fair price as I think that he is the best horse in the race.

Unbreakable has been in good form, but I can’t get him as short as his current quote and that means that there is plenty of value available for other runners. She’s Got Speed has only recorded the one race from her nine race starts, but the form around her is extremely strong and she should not be as long as $10. Lightning Bell has been working towards a victory and he is far from the worst chance at $10.

This is not a race that I am particularly keen to get involved in. There are a number of horses that have always promised plenty without delivering as well as other gallopers that are progressive types, but we don’t know how good they are. Very few results in this race would surprise me.

No Bets

This is another tricky betting race, but there are a couple of chances that appeal at good odds. Olivier delivered us a good result last start at Caulfield and there is no reason that he can’t produce another strong performance. The wide draw is a slight concern, but that is why we are getting such a good price. Rich Jack comes out of a high-rating first-up race and he is a horse that has produced a number of quality performances during his racing career.

A difficult way to finish for punters. Refulgent is a horse that is heading in the right direction this preparation and the step-up to 1600 metres should suit. He always runs well third-up and the wide draw might actually be an advantage at this stage of the day. Nevis was poor last start, but I am willing to give him another chance. Katelyn Mallyon should be able to control the race from gate five and he has to be considered.
