2016 Vicbred Super Series Preview

Facebooktwittermail

It is one of the biggest weekend on the Australian Harness Racing Calendar as Melton hosts the Vicbred Super Series on both Friday and Saturday night.

The Vicbred Super Series includes an incredible 12 Group 1 races over the two nights and there is an outstanding array of betting events on both cards.

I have closely analysed all 12 Group 1 races that are set to take place and below you can find my thoughts and recommended betting plays for each!

Friday Night

Race 3 - 7:00pm

Vicbred Super Series 3YO Trotting Fillies Final (2240m)

Princess Phoenix will start this race as one of the favourites and she has plenty of talent, but she does plenty wrong during her races and she has cost herself countless events. I am happy to bet around her as well as the lightly-raced Into The Unknown, who seems far too short at $2.70. Sky Majesty is the value selection. She has won three of her past four races and there was plenty to like about her last start victory at Bendigo.

Race 4 - 7:30pm

Vicbred Super Series 2YO Trotting Colts & Geldings (2240m)

The betting suggests that this is a race in two between Deltasun and Illawong Bryon and that looks to be the case. They are both ultra-consistent two-year-olds, but you can’t ignore the fact that Illawong Byron broke 2:01 over this track and distance. He is a gelding with a great deal of talent and I am willing to dive in at the short price.

Race 6 - 8:30pm

Vicbred Super Series 4YO Trotting Entires & Geldings (2240m)

Another Illawong horse is a clear favourite in this race, but I am keen to take this one on. Illawong Armstrong obviously has plenty of talent, but he definitely does not have the edge over this field that the market suggests. Sparkling Success actually has the quicker time over this track and distance and he is just as consistent as the favourite. He is a great bet at his current odds.

Race 7 - 9:03pm

Vicbred Super Series 3YO Trotting Colts & Geldings (2400m)

Sundons Courage is a narrow favourite, but I much prefer Cruisin Around. Cruisin Around has recorded four wins on the trot and he very rarely runs a bad race, while his best time is clearly superior to that of Sundons Courage. Calder Knight does not win out of turn, but he is capable of an impressive performance on his day and I am more than happy to save on him at the current price.

Race 8 - 9:30pm

Vicbred Super Series 4YO Trotting Mares (2240m)

This is a high-quality race and Sky Petite is set to start as a clear favourite. She is a highly talented mare and she has won four races on the trot, but the question is whether you can get her as short as $1.80. The better value does lie with Val Gardena. She has been in almost as consistent form in the past 12 months and she has a great record at Melton. $5.50 is over the odds.

Race 9 - 10:03pm

Vicbred Super Series 2YO Trotting Fillies (2240m)

This is a very tricky betting race as there is not a great deal of exposed form. It is easy to see why Illawong Shimmer is a clear favourite, but it is tough to get her as short as her current quote. Finding a filly to beat her is even more difficult and I am happy to stay out of this race from a betting perspective.

Saturday Night

Race 3 - 6:32pm

Vicbred Super Series 2YO Fillies (2240m)

Petacular and Perfect Sense are both very talented, but seem to have found their right prices. The valye runner is Michael Stanley-trained Soho Angel. Her recent form has been excellent and her best time at the track and distance is not far behind the two favourites. I am more than happy to have a small bet on her at the current price.

Race 4 - 7:00pm

Vicbred Super Series 2YO Colts & Geldings (2240m)

Tingira Beach is another favourite that looks well and truly under the odds and I couldn’t back him at anything worse than $2. That means that there is plenty of value available elsewhere. You can’t knock the form of Jilliby Kung Fu and he is well over the odds at $6.50 and you can make a case for both Wrappers Delight and Our Little General. I am happy to back all three in an attempt to get a result against the favourite.

Race 5 - 7:30pm

Vicbred Super Series 3YO Fillies

Rocknroll Magic is a star filly and there is plenty to like about her in this race. She has not looked like getting beaten in recent runs. She has an incredibly high-cruising speed and she looks to be a class above the rest of this field. I am more than happy to dive in at the $1.90 as I think that she should be a fair bit shorter.

Race 6 - 8:00pm

Vicbred Super Series 3YO Colts & Geldings (2240m)

This is one of the most open races of the entire Vicbred Super Series. You can make a case for just about every horse in this field, but I am keen to back Don’t Hold Back and Senor Macray. Neither of them are the most consistent horses in this field – that title would belong to Iceenothink – but I think that they have upside that is unmatched by the rest of this field and they will fight out the finish if they both bring their best form.

Race 7 - 8:30pm

Vicbred Super Series 4YO Entires & Geldings (2240m)

Ideal For Real has plenty of talent, but he is far from unbeatable and he is a touch of unders at his current price of $1.55. I would much prefer to be on the not as consistent, but the equally as talented Menin Gate. It has been a while between wins, but his best form is more than good enough to win this race and he will make his own luck in the early stages of the race.

Race 8 - 9:00pm

Vicbred Super Series 4YO Mares

Delight Me is in a very similar box as Ideal For Real – she has a great deal of talent but I can’t get her as short as the $1.65 that is currently on offer. Starburst Girl has been beaten at her past two starts, but she had genuine excuses in both and I think that she is more than capable of bouncing back. The value runner is Lovelist. She very rarely runs a bad race and she did give Delight Me a serious scare last start over this track and venue.
