It really is tough to know what to make of this fight.
On one hand it is two of the biggest names in the history of Australian boxing doing battle at one of the country’s great sporting venues, but on the other hand you could argue that it is two has-beens chasing one last pay check.
No matter what your opinion of this fight there is still money to be made and we have taken a very close look at both fighters to find the best betting value in this unique clash.
Mundine vs Green Betting
We currently have Danny Green as a clear favourite to avenge his loss to Anthony Mundine and he is available at a quote of $1.45 to defeat his great rival.
Mundine has drifted out to a quote of $2.75 and it would not surprise if he started at longer odds than this on Friday.
There is currently $1.62 available for the fight to go the distance and $2.20 for it to be finished within 12 round, but Danny Green by KO or TKO or DQ is favourite at $2 in method of victory betting markets.
Mundine vs Green Recent Form
Mundine will be returning to the ring for the first time since he was beaten by Charles Hatley in November of 2015.
His overall record is impressive, but his form since he was beaten by Daniel Geale at the start of 2013 has been inconsistent at best.
Mundine beaten Shane Mosley and Gunnar Jackson, but he lost to Josh Clottey in April of 2014 and he has not won a fight since he beat Sergey Rabchenko in November of 2014.
Danny Green came out of retirement to beat Roberto Bolonti in Melbourne in August of 2015 and he claimed the Australian Cruiserweight title when he beat Kane Watts in August last year.
Green has not lost since he was beaten by Krzysztof Wlodarczyk in November of 2011, but it should be noted that he has had only four fights since.
How Mundine Can Win?
It is Mundine’s often controversial actions and outspokenness that often dominates the headlines – the lead-up to this fight has been dominated by the controversy surrounding the Australian National Anthem – but that often clouds the fact that he is a very talented boxer.
He was simply too fast for Green when they first did battle over a decade ago and that will be his big advantage once again, but the big question mark is whether he will still have the superior mobility after putting on ten kilograms to take this fight at Cruiserweight.
Mundine’s chin has also been questioned in recent years, but he has still only lost three fights by knockout during his career.
Mundine was able to stop Shane Mosley, but it is fair to say that a decision victory is definitely his most likely form of victory over Green.
How Green Can Win?
Danny Green will go into this fight as a clear favourite and there are a number of experts who believe that he should have no problems recording a comfortable victory.
Jeff Fenech believes that the step-up in weight class for Mundine will prove far too much and that a 90 kilogram Green will have far too much power for Mundine.
There is no doubt that Green has the power advantage and he is capable of finishing this fight with one punch, but it should be noted that he has not won a fight by knockout since he came out of retirement.
Our Prediction
This is a very tough fight to analyse as there is no doubt that both fighters are past their best.
Green is a deserving favourite and there is an argument to be made that his power will be far too much for Mundine in the early stages of the fight, but if Mundine is able to get into the fight his speed could prove crucial in the final stages.
I am hedging my bets and the market offers us an excellent opportunity to come away with a profit no matter what fighter wins the fight.
