Australia will take on New Zealand in a Bledisloe Cup clash in Dunedin this weekend and recent history is against the Wallabies.
The Wallabies have not won a Bledisloe Cup test in New Zealand since they beat the All-Blacks in Dunedin in August of 2001 and it is fair to say that the world was a much different place back then.
We have delved into the time capsule to give you some insight into what the world was like the last time that Australia Rugby Union tasted success in New Zealand and some of the stuff going on was pretty weird.
John Howard Was Prime Minister
John Howard was in the final stages of his second term in office when Australia last won a Bledisloe Cup test in New Zealand.
To put that into context we have had six different prime ministers – Howard, Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Rudd again, Tony Abbott and Malcom Turnbull – since we last won a single test match in New Zealand.
Stone Cold Steve Austin Was WWF Champion
Not only was the WWE still known as the WWF the last time that Australia won a Bledisloe Cup test match in New Zealand, but the great man Stone Cold Steve Austin was the WWF Champion.
Austin has now been retired for a well over a decade and we still haven’t really recovered.
MSN Messenger Was King
Forget about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat – back in 2001 MSN Messenger was the only online destination that you needed!
MSN Messenger turned emoticons into a thing – you weren’t cool unless you had a couple of stars in your name – and was revolutionary for the time as long as your Mum didn’t need to use the phone!
Manchester City Weren’t In The English Premier League
Manchester City are now perennial English Premier League title contenders and one of the biggest clubs in Europe, but in 2001 Manchester City were second division battlers.
They may have won The Championship and quickly returned to the top flight during the 2001-2002 season, but the English Premier League title they won in 2012 seemed an eternity and what turned out to be billions of dollars away.
The Newcastle Knights Were Good At Rugby League
It has been a tough few years for the Newcastle Knights and they are staring down the barrel of another wooden spoon, but back in 2001 the Knights were in the middle of the Andrew Johns-era.
The Knights went into the 2001 NRL Grand Final as clear underdogs, but they stunned the Parramatta Eels with a first-half barrage and claimed their second title.
Uncle Kracker’s Follow Me Was The Number 1 Song in Australia
The number one song in Australia the last time that the Wallabies won a Bledisloe Cup test match in New Zealand was Uncle Kracker’s Follow Me.
Those that don’t remember this ripper of a tune are in for an absolute treat!
The Brisbane Lions Were On Top Of The AFL
The Brisbane Lions have been stuck towards the bottom of the AFL ladder for the better part of a decade, but in 2001 they were building towards a maiden premiership.
They haven’t played finals football since 2009, but they have still won three times as many AFL Premierships as the Wallabies have Bledisloe Cup games in New Zealand since 2001.
The Simpsons Was Still Good
The Simpsons is just about to start its 28th season and frankly it isn’t much good anymore.
Back in 2001, the Simpsons was still pumping out the classics – although the slide into mediocrity was just around the corner.
In fact there is an excellent comparison to be made between the quality of The Simpsons and the quality of the Wallabies in the past decade!
Roger Federer Hadn’t Won A Grand Slam
It seems incredible to think that a world once existed in which Roger Federer had not won a Grand Slam.
Federer now has 19 Grand Slam Singles titles to his name but in 2001 he was just another tennis prodigy – think Nick Kyrgios – that was yet to really live up to his potential.
Survivor Was Only In Its Third Season
Season 35 of Survivor will begin next month – not the Australian version – but back when Australia last won a Bledisloe Cup match in New Zealand the franchise was still fresh and in the middle of its third season.
As a side note everybody should go back and rewatch Survivor: Africa – they damm near almost killed people out there due to either crippling dehydration or a lion attack!
Sunline & Northerly Were Dominating Australian Racing
We have Winx now, but back in 2001 it was the remarkably Sunline as well as the Fighting Tiger Northerly that dominated Australian racing.
Sunline won the Memsie Stakes and Turnbull Stakes during the 2001 Spring Racing Carnival, while Northerly won The Goodwood Sprint (on the same day Australia last beat New Zealand in New Zealand), the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes, the Underwood Stakes, the Caulfield Stakes and the Cox Plate.
Everybody Was Wearing FUBU
I can’t really explain this one.
The 1990s and early 2000s was a strange time for fashion but surely the obsession with FUBU takes the cake!
The Goodwill Games Were Just About To Start In Brisbane
Does anybody remember The Goodwill Games? We don’t either.
Who would have thought that an event that involved Bardot covering the Village People’s Go West would not be a roaring success.
Barack Obama Was An Illinois State Senator
Barack Obama has now finished his two terms as President Of The United States – sadly – but back when the Wallabies last beat the All-Blacks in New Zealand he was a lowly State Senator from Illinois.
We have no idea what the TV show below is even about, but it is fair to say that they would have a tough time booking Obama these days.
Burgo’s Catch Phrase Was Still On The Tube
What a legend John Burgess is.
Burgo’s Catch Phrase may be one of the most underrated game shows in the history of television and it was still on the air back when Australia last won a Bledisloe Cup game in New Zealand!
The Wallabies Could Win In New Zealand
If there is anything to be learnt from this dive back in time it is that it has been a very long time since the Wallabies were good at Rugby Union!
