The Winterbottom Stakes is the penultimate Group 1 race of the year in Australia and is the clear highlight of another big weekend of racing.
Great Shot gave the locals a Group 1 win in the Railway Stakes last weekend and it is another local galloper State Solicitor that is a clear favourite in our Winterbottom Stakes betting market.
Can State Solicitor claim a maiden Group 1 victory or will there be a Winterbottom Stakes upset? We have analysed every horse in the field and our Winterbottom Stakes tips can be found below.
Rock Magic failed to record a race win during his 2017 Spring Racing Carnival campaign, but he ran extremely well at the highest level. He was narrowly denied in the Moir Stakes and he was a touch disappointing in the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes before he finished better than midfield in the Darley Classic. This is a much weaker race than that sort of company and he is the benchmark horse in this field. He doesn’t have the same upside as some of his rivals, but if the likes of State Solicitor fail to fire he could be the last man standing.
Santa Ana Lane
Santa Ana Lane has been freshened-up since he recorded an upset win in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. A repeat of his Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes performance would put him right in this race, but that was something of a spike rating. Everything went right for him in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and he is a horse that does always need luck in running. I am happy to take him on at his current price.
Durendal is yet to win since he was transferred to the care of Chris Gangemi and sent to Perth. He was disappointing first-up in the Prince Of Wales Stakes, but he did produce an improved effort in the Colonel Reeves Stakes. He would need to improve to turn-the-tables on State Solicitor.
It has been well over a year between wins for Dream Lifter. He did finished a close third first-up in the Prince Of Wales Stakes, but he has never shown anything to suggest that he is capable of winning a race of this quality.
Malibu Style has returned to Perth following a fairly uninspiring 2017 Spring Racing Carnival preparation in Melbourne. His best effort came in the Gilgai Stakes, but he has since failed to fire in the Italktravel Stakes and the Multiplier Stakes. It is tough to back him off those efforts.
The River has been scratched from the 2017 Winterbottom Stakes.
Profit Street is a horse with an electric turn-of-foot and he flew home late in both the Prince Of Wales Stakes and the Colonel Reeve Stakes. He would need to go to another level to win the Winterbottom Stakes, but it is easy to see him running a big race with some luck in running.
State Solicitor is clearly the horse to beat in the 2017 Winterbottom Stakes. He has been set for this race since he finished a luckless sixth 12 months ago and if he can produce that level of performance, in what was a much tougher race, he will be very hard to beat. State Solicitor returned to the races with the softest of wins and his effort in the Colonel Reeves Stakes had to be seen to be believed. At the top of the straight he was almost at the tail of the field with no room to run, but Willie Pike was eventually able to find clear running and despite having no momentum he was able to finish over the top of his rivals. He doesn’t have to get that far back and as long as he has even luck in running.
Viddora has been in stellar form for Lloyd Kennewell, but she is well and truly under the odds in our Winterbottom Stakes betting market. The I Am Invincible mare was only narrowly denied a maiden Group 1 win in the Moir Stakes before she finished a credible fourth in the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes in a race that was run to suit. She has run well over 1200 metres in the past, but she is yet to win over the trip and could be found wanting late if they do go fast early.
Whispering Brook started her racing career with five straight wins, but she hasn’t really kicked on as an older horse. She will likely press forward in the early stages of the Winterbottom Stakes and give her rivals something to chase, but it is tough to see her holding off the likes of State Solicitor.
Dainty Tess is another horse that comes out of the Colonel Reeves Stakes. She wasn’t disgraced and she won the Prince Of Wales Stakes before that, but whether she will be able to turn-the-tables on State Solicitor is a genuine question mark.
Fuhryk is the x-factor in the Winterbottom Stakes field. She has struggled for consistency this preparation, but she is capable of a high-rating performance on her day. The drop back in trip does suit and the wide barrier draw should ensure that she finds clear running at the right time. She has always looked capable of winning a lower level Group 1 race and she does offer some value at $11.
Caipirinha looked set to record a big upset win in the Colonel Reeves Stakes, but she was run down late by State Solicitor. That looked her best chance to take out a big race this Summer and the step from 1100 metres up to 1200 metres is a disadvantage for her.
