2017 Lough Neagh Stakes Day Preview

Race 1 - 1:27pm AEDT

Makers Mark Plate (1350m)

This is an interesting way to start the day for punters. Doubt Defying, I’m A Rippa and Eminent really do look like the standouts in this field and luck in running could play a big part in the final result. I would be surprised if one of these three gallopers didn’t win, but they all look to have found their right price.

Race 2 - 2:02pm AEDT

Canadian Club Handicap (1615m)

There has already been a fair amount of money for Endless Days, but he still looks like excellent value at his current price. He doesn’t win out of turn, but he is capable of a high-rating performance on his day. The step-back in trip is an advantage and I like the fact that he has been given a barrier trial between starts. It would not surprise if the money continues to come for the four-year-old.

Race 3 - 2:37pm AEDT

Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1110m)

There are only five horses in the Phelan Ready Stakes field, but it is still an excellent race. EF Troop and Crockett have both started their racing careers with impressive wins, but Commissioner could be better than both of them. He won a barrier trial at Wyong ahead of his racing debut and Team Snowden have an outstanding strike rate when they send horses to Queensland. He has the benefit of Damian Browne in the saddle and he can make a winning start to his racing career.

Race 4 - 3:12pm AEDT

Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1110m)

This is a very open edition of the Calaway Gal Stakes and there is a host of winning chances. This is not a game that I want to get too heavily involved in, but the debutant Sizzling Ace does appeal at her current price. She won a barrier trial at the Gold Coast in good style and Toby Edmonds has an excellent record with early two-year-olds. The presence of Jeff Lloyd in the saddle is an obvious advantage.

Cascade Open Handicap (2020m)

Long Time Ago will start the Cascade Open Handicap as a clear favourite and she is deserving of that status. She won the Summoned Stakes at Ladbrokes Park on Zipping Classic Day and she was not disgraced at the same venue last start. Corey Brown will take her straight to the front in the early stages of this race and she will prove very tough to catch.

Race 6 - 4:32pm AEDT

Listed Bribie Handicap (1050m)

This is a stellar edition of the Bribie Handicap and a number of horses bring some excellent form into this clash. All Over Bosanova has recorded five wins from her eight race starts and this could be the preparation that she goes to another level. She has form around a number of quality gallopers and she won the Daybreak Lover Plate on Stradbroke Handicap Day earlier in the year. She has trialed well ahead of her return to racing and she does look to have more upside than the rest of this field.

Race 7 - 5:12pm AEDT

Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m)

I am keen to take on Pierata and there is plenty of value around him. He was obviously impressive in the Winning Rupert Plate, but he faces a much tougher field in the Gold Edition Plate. Goodfella drops back in class significantly after contesting the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Victoria Derby Day and if he can return to the form that he showed when he won the Brian Crowley Stakes in Sydney he will be very tough to beat. $6.50 is well and truly over the odds.

Super Ex improved each time that he was seen at the races during the 2017 Spring Racing Carnival and he is a horse that still has plenty of upside. The form around him is strong and he makes his own luck right on the speed.

Debonairly returned to winning form with a tough effort in the Magic Millions Classic at Ballarat and she still has improvement left in her. She is another horse that will press forward in the early stages and her best form would have her right in this race.

Race 8 - 5:47pm AEDT

Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m)

Monsieur Gustave has recorded four wins on the trot and there is no reason that he can’t continue his winning ways in the Lough Neagh Stakes. He is a highly likeable horse that not only makes his own luck right on the speed, but has an excellent will to win. Tiffani Brooker is an underrated hoop and she has played a key role in this horses development.

Race 9 - 6:25pm AEDT

Congratulations Jim Roberts On 30 Years Plate (1200m)

This is a tough way to finish the day for punters and there are plenty of winning chances. This is not a race that I am keen to get overly invested in, but Oink does appeal at his current price. Oink generally produces his best form fresh and there is no doubt that Kelly Schweida has him very forward for his return to the races.
