2018 World Cup Round Of 16 Preview

Round of 16

France Vs Argentina

A knockout match that some expected to come much later in the tournament however it is a great way to begin the knockout phase of play.

Argentina have won the last two meetings between these sides, however those were both friendlies in 2007 and 2009.

During the group stage, the 2014 runners up looked somewhat disjointed but were still able to produce moments of quality to get through a tough group and are looking to progress to the quarter finals for the third straight time.

France on the other hand have not lived up to the potential that their squad has on paper, grinding out wins over Australia and Peru before their dead rubber draw with Denmark.

We have been waiting for one of these sides to break out and live up to their potential and whoever can play closest to that level will be the side to get by and Argentina are the pick here.

Uruguay Vs Portugal

Making just their fourth appearance in the knockout stage, Portugal find themselves in the tougher half of the draw as they seek to win the World Cup.

It starts with a Uruguay side that in their last game put up a score that reflects the quality of the group stage.

This is the first time these sides have met since 1972 so any familiarity between the sides will come from their club engagements.

Uruguay are yet to concede a goal in this tournament winning to nil in each match so a low scoring contest is on the cards however it is hard to see Ronaldo and company kept off the scoresheet.

Extra time is a real possibility here and it may come down to a Ronaldo moment late on to decide the match, back the To Qualify market for a bit of extra insurance against extra time however.

Spain Vs Russia

Monday 2 July, 12:00am, Luzhniki Stadium

If you are evaluating this match purely on paper it should go easily to Spain however with the favourites needing a late goal to get by Morocco in their final group match, they will need to improve on their performance.

Russia started off the tournament so well, trouncing Saudi Arabia and Egypt before a lacklustre effort against Uruguay dropped them to second in Group A.

They will put together a much stronger effort in this match having had the chance to refresh and rejuvenate their squad and will look to give Spain a real run.

Spain have won all three matches at major tournaments between these sides with both meetings in Euro 2008 being comfortable three goal victories.

Their last meeting in November last year was a 3-3 thriller and there should be plenty of goals here too.

Croatia Vs Denmark

Monday 2 July, 4:00am, Nizhny Novgorod Stadium

Two goals turned out to be enough for Denmark to get through to the knockout phase with a win and two draws and their reward might be one of the form sides of the tournament.

Croatia are undefeated and have let in just one goal which came from the penalty spot as their golden generation stepped up.

With seven goals scored in three games, the Croatians are making sides try to keep up with them and they should be able to stay ahead of a Danish side who have not quite clicked.

Six of Croatia’s seven goals have come in the second half of matches and they have been able to run over opponents so a second half victory is the play here.

Brazil Vs Mexico

Tuesday 3 July, 12:00am, Cosmos Arena

For the 13th straight time, Brazil have made it through the group stage and are looking to reach the quarter finals for the seventh straight World Cup.

Mexico progressed despite a 3-0 loss to Sweden in their last match which did cost them top spot in Group F.

Recent history suggests this will be their toughest round as they have been eliminated in the Round of 16 in the last six World Cups.

Despite Neymar’s theatrics, the Brazilians are growing into this tournament and are producing enough to get by their rivals.

Both history and the odds say that Brazil will progress here and while Mexico will find a way to grab a goal, Brazil have too much talent to be out scored here.

Belgium Vs Japan

Tuesday 3 July, 4:00am, Rostov Arena

Belgium’s Golden Generation may never have a better opportunity to win a major title and they will go into this clash with Japan as dominant favourites.

Belgium swept through the group stages with three straight wins and the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard look in excellent touch, but they face a different type of challenge against a well-organised Japan outfit and there isn’t as much between these two teams as the current market suggests.

Japan did have a bit of luck on their side, but they were still able to navigate their way out of what was a tough group and they have gone back to the possession style of football that has seen them have plenty of success in the past.

This approach could frustrate Belgium and they are a side that have struggled to hold their nerve in the knockout stages of major tournaments in the past.

Japan are more than capable of progressing to the quarter-finals and the $3.10 available for the Japan or Draw Double Chance is outstanding value.

Sweden Vs Switzerland

Wednesday 4 July, 12:00am, Krestovsky Stadium

Sweden stormed into the Round of 16 with a convincing win over Mexico and managed to steal top spot in Group F, putting them on the favourable side of the draw.

The three goals they scored in that match was their highest score in a match in their last four outings which also made them the group’s highest scoring team.

Switzerland were held to a draw by Costa Rica but still survived thanks to Brazil’s win.

Goals have not been a problem for this side scoring in every match as well and this has the makings of an even match that will go down to penalties.

Colombia Vs England

Wednesday 4 July, 4:00am, Otkrite Arena

This may be the most highly-anticipated game of this stage of the tournament and there is now plenty of hype surrounding this England outfit.

England may have lost their final pool game to Belgium, but that has actually been seen as a positive and they will start this clash with Colombia as clear favourites.

There is no doubt that England have played some excellent football at times during this tournament, but the hype may have gone a touch too far and they do seem under the odds to progress to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2006.

One of the main reasons that England are as short as they are are due to concerns over the fitness of Colombia star James Rodriguez.

There is still hope that Rodriguez will take his place, but he is clearly not at full fitness and Colombia do struggle without him in the side.

In saying that, they were able to find a winner against Senegal without him on the pitch and there is still plenty of talent in this outfit.

This could end up being another cagey affair and the $3.15 for a stalemate at the end of 90 minutes does appeal.

Group Stage

Russia Vs Saudi Arabia

Friday 15 June, 1:00am, Luzhniki Stadium

Tournament hosts Russia get things started with what looks like their easiest group stage game.

South Africa are the only host side to have not won their opening match of the tournament and Russia come into this match as strong favourites.

They do not have a great record at recent World Cups however, winning just two of their nine games played since 1994 and never making it out of the group stage in that time.

Saudi Arabia have made the World Cup for the first time since 2006 but have a similarly poor record since 1994 notching just two wins from 13 games.

Russia at home, with all of the pomp and ceremony will be eager to start their tournament off on a good note and should be able to beat an opponent that does struggle away from home.

Group A’s other two teams kick off day two of the World Cup with Luis Suarez and the rest of Uruguay’s star studded lineup facing Egypt.

Their record in tournament openers is not exactly encouraging with their last victory coming in 1970 when they beat Israel 2-0.

Since then they have drawn three and lost three games to start the tournament.

Egypt’s hopes will centre around the man who has spent the last ten months carrying Liverpool in the Premier League and Mohammed Salah will need to be over his shoulder injury to give their attack any real teeth.

Even if Salah is firing though it is too tough to think he can get the whole team by Uruguay.

Morocco Vs Iran

Saturday 16 June, 1:00am, Krestovsky Stadium

Buried in between two much more interesting matches, the two forecast “also-rans” in Group B face off eager for a victory that will keep their slim progression hopes alive.

Iran have a stingy defence and will opt to put every available player behind the ball and try to sneak a goal from a quickfire counter attack.

They have been able to keep seven clean sheets in the past year and have only conceded multiple goals twice in 14 matches.

Morocco have a similar defensive record going six games without conceding in qualifying and have not lost in ten matches, so this game is unlikely to produce a whole lot of attacking highlights.

It is too hard to split these teams and neither one can really afford a loss here as they are already entering this tournament behind the eight ball.

Portugal Vs Spain

Saturday 16 June, 4:00am, Fisht Stadium

Easily one of the biggest matches of the entire group stage here and Portugal-Spain promises to have plenty of intrigue that will hopefully make the early morning worth it.

Spain were famously destroyed 5-1 by the Netherlands in their opener four years ago and lost their tournament opener in 2010 against Switzerland.

Portugal on the other hand are the defending European champions and while their squad top to bottom might not be as good as Spain’s, they will have the best player on the pitch.

This will be the first meeting between these sides since Spain won on penalties in the Euro 2012 knockout stage.

This is likely to be a slow starting game with both sides trying to feel each other out before both sides find the scoresheet in the second half.

Beaten in the final four years ago, Argentina are back and looking to take advantage of the twilight of Lionel Messi’s international career.

Iceland capitalised on the momentum generated during Euro 2016 and put together a solid qualifying campaign to make it to the World Cup for the first time in their history.

Their preparation for this tournament has not been ideal, winless in their last four friendlies including losses to World Cup participants Mexico and Peru.

Argentina will dominate play in this one with Iceland happy to sit back and take the pressure.

Denmark make their fifth appearance at the World Cup after exiting in the Group Stage in 2010.

They are putting together a good run of results with a 14 game unbeaten run dating back to October 2016.

Peru on the other hand are one of the tournament’s unknowns with a side that has not had a lot of international exposure.

Two of the best dressed sides in the tournament face off in Group D’s second game.

Croatia have lost their last three opening game’s in the World Cup, going down 1-0 to Mexico in 2002 and Brazil in 2006 before a 3-1 loss again to Brazil in the opening game of 2014.

They will be eager to end that streak with a win against one of their main rivals as neither side will want to rely on needing a result against Argentina in the coming games.

Nigeria also struggle in their early games lately losing two of their last three tournament openers.

While they will certainly bring flair and excitement to this contest, I am backing the disciplined Croatian side to get the three points on offer.

Costa Rica Vs Serbia

Sunday 17 June, 10:00pm, Samara Arena

Costa Rica kick started their quarter final run four years ago with a shock first up win over Uruguay and a similar result against Serbia here would go a long way to setting themselves up for success again.

They have looked largely out of sorts as of late, losing four of their last six against European opponents including a 4-1 hammering from Belgium.

You cannot accuse them of ducking strong opponents though as three of those losses came against Belgium, England and Spain which they hope will prepare them for a team like Serbia.

Their opponents are making their first appearance since 2010 and their second as an independent nation.

This has the makings of a rough and tumble match with plenty of hard challenges and not a lot of shots on target.

Germany Vs Mexico

Monday 18 June, 1:00am, Luzhniki Stadium

Four years after winning the tournament in Brazil, the Germans are back to defend their crown, starting with their first challenger Mexico.

Joachim Low’s side cruised through qualifying but have not looked invincible as some would make them out to be, losing to Austria and only just getting by Saudi Arabia in what was supposed to be a farewell romp.

Mexico have taken at least a point in their opening game in every tournament since 1998, winning four games and drawing the other.

They have met Germany three times in the World Cup with the most recent encounterin the 1998 round of 16 when the Germans won 2-1.

While there is a bit of concern about Germany’s recent form, count them out when the lights go on at your own peril and they should comfortably win thanks to their legs in midfield.

Brazil Vs Switzerland

As one of the tournament heavyweights, it is critical for Brazil to get their campaign off to a strong start when they face Switzerland in this game.

Despite a couple of high scoring games in the past year, this Swiss are not a side with a whole lot of firepower up front, meaning their midfield will not only have to contain Brazil’s outstanding players but provide a lot of attacking thrust as well.

Brazil on the other hand are coming in with high expectations and will be eager to erase the way they were bundled out four years ago.

This is the game where they will look to make a big statement about why they are one of the popular picks to win the entire thing.

Sweden Vs Korea Republic

Monday 18 June, 10:00pm, Stade Pierre-Mauroy

Despite no Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Sweden’s squad, they still have plenty of recognisable names and are slight favourites here.

There is a reason they were able to defeat Italy in a playoff last year to make the World Cup but they have won just one of their six matches since, and all have been very low scoring.

Since 2002 South Korea have won three and drawn their other World Cup opener showing this side now knows how to start off on the right foot, a slight improvement on losing 9-0 to Hungary in their 1954 debut.

Neither side will be taking an overly aggressive approach in this one instead looking to not blow their tournament in the first few minutes which should keep things very close.

Normally in these previews we try to stay down the middle and avoid any definitive statements with huge proclamations.

That being said there is no way that Panama even gets close to Belgium here as the star studded side should blast their opponents out of the water.

Panama haven’t exactly faced a murderers row of opponents in the lead up to this game, drawing with Northern Ireland and losing to Norway.

It comes against a Tunisian side that has won a grand total of one World Cup match which came back in 1978.

They are returning to the World Cup after 12 years away and qualified on the back of an impressive eight game unbeaten run.

As far as Japan goes, their lead up to this has not been at all ideal with losses in six of their past ten matches.

We can expect Japan to play with a similar approach to what they used away to Australia in Melbourne in 2016 as they will sit back and defend at will.

Draws have been the order of the last year or so for Colombia with six a draw being their most common result.

Going into this game the big question is whether or not Mo Salah will be used in this game after Hector Cuper kept him on the bench in the first game.

This will be the first time Russia and Egypt have played each other at senior international level but Russia has faced an African opponent three times at a World Cup since 1994 winning two and drawing the other.

Playing against Cristiano Ronaldo won’t make things any easier after the Portuguese captain’s hat-trick against Spain.

Amazingly, Morocco won the lone meeting between these sides back in the 1986 World Cup however we are fairly confident there are no players left from that day.

Morocco cannot afford to be as wasteful as they were in their first match, failing to convert any of their 13 goal attempts against Iran and they will be lucky to get half of that against Portugal.

Their most recent encounter was in September 2015 which yielded a Brazilian victory and is something that is expected here with them coming in at such short odds.

Iceland may not play the prettiest brand of football, in fact it can be downright ugly at times but it has been effective over the last few years.

In competitive senior matches over the past year, goals have been at a premium with more than two goals happening just twice, in a qualifier in Turkey and a friendly against Indonesia.

It took a while for Belgium to get going but they eventually pulled away from Panama and registered a 3-0 that could easily have been more.

Regardless of the result in the other game, a win for Belgium here would all but secure progression to the knockout phase while a loss for Tunisia eliminates them.

Tunisia deployed some interesting tactics against England occasionally opting for something more suited to the Rugby World Cup in Japan next year but they did hold out for a long time.

It will take a similarly herculean effort to slow down a more potent Belgian attack, who would be hoping to avoid another slow start, expect an early goal to get Belgium rolling and they will go on and book their passage to the knockouts.

Can South Korea find the breakthrough they lacked against Switzerland?

With Germany looming this game is critical for South Korea as they will need a win to give them some sort of encouragement going into the final group game.

One issue for them is that they are winless in their last six World Cup matches with two draws and four losses.

Mexico will have to be much more proactive this game as South Korea will not be as attacking as Germany which means they will have to show a bit more attacking focus going forward.

In the race for goal difference in Group G, England need to do better than their 2-1 win over Tunisia and ideally top Belgium’s 3-0 result from when they played Panama.

Despite the difference in calibre between these two sides, we have seen this World Cup produce plenty of upsets already and this is a prime candidate considering the participants and England’s World Cup history.

Since 1998 England have not had a perfect group stage record, dropping points in every tournament.

This will not be the game where England drop points however and they will produce a workmanlike showing to win here.

Japan Vs Senegal

Monday 25 June, 1:00am, Central Stadium

Two surprise matchday one winners face off in a game that suddenly has big implications on the knockout stages.

Japan survived a 10-man Colombia but will feel like that game was closer that it really should have been and Senegal were at their opportunistic best to defeat Poland.

This has the makings of an excellent game with both sides having very mobile lineups making for a fast paced game.

The fact both teams will be happy with a draw here that will put them in prime position going into the final matches makes this the play for the game

Poland Vs Colombia

Monday 25 June, 4:00am, Kazan Arena

As long as Colombia do not receive a red card in the third minute, they will be in with a much better chance to win this game than they were for most of the Japan game.

Poland were dire in their loss to Senegal and a draw here does neither team any good so look for both sides to play for a win.

As the two sides that were seen as favourites to progress from Group H, one could very easily see their campaign ended with a loss here which adds even more intrigue to this contest.

Choosing between the two, Colombia still showed plenty of potential in their defeat despite being down to 10 men and if they can keep a full side on the pitch, they will be able to close things out much better than before.

Uruguay Vs Russia

Tuesday 26 June, 12:00am, Samara Arena

Group A’s meaningful fixture as it will decide top spot and whatever advantage playing the side that finishes second out of Spain or Portugal (or Iran) can give.

Russia have the theoretical advantage going into this game thanks to their superior goal difference meaning a draw is going to be enough to finish ahead of Uruguay.

Their lone meeting finished as a 1-1 draw back in 2012 but the Russians will feel like they are a real chance to come away with all three points here.

Uruguay have not lived up to their potential so far with a pair of 1-0 wins and it is hard to see them suddenly clicking into gear in their toughest test yet.

Both sides will have their chances here and they will cancel one another out with Russia finishing on top of Group A.

Saudi Arabia Vs Egypt

Tuesday 26 June, 12:00am, Volgograd Arena

The other game from Group A comes with nothing other than pride on the line for Saudi Arabia and Egypt as they both try to avoid finishing last.

Egypt have scored a goal in this tournament while Saudi Arabia were thoroughly outclassed in the opener against Russia before losing to Uruguay.

In the eight head to head meetings, it is Egypt with the advantage having won six clashes.

Back them to make it seven from nine here with a win to end the tournament on a high note.

Spain Vs Morocco

Tuesday 26 June, 4:00am, Kaliningrad Stadium

One eye focused on the pitch, one eye on the scoreboard, that is the case for the Group B finale as these sides prepare to meet for the first time since 1961.

Morocco have played some excellent football but have had nothing to show for it in terms of points and already know that this will be their last game but a win against Spain would be an excellent way for them to end the tournament.

A draw is enough for Spain to advance to the knockout stage however a win, ideally by bettering Portugal’s’ scoreline against Iran, will let them top the group.

Morocco will finally get their reward with a goal but Spain will take care of business here.

Iran Vs Portugal

Tuesday 26 June, 4:00am, Mordovia Arena

Thanks to their own goal victory over Morocco, Iran enter this game knowing if they beat Portugal they will qualify for the Round of 16.

A draw could be good enough for both sides to advance pending the Spain result which does give Portugal margin for error but they will more likely than not need a win to top Group B.

The fact they are in this position boils down to the efforts of Cristiano Ronaldo and all four of his goals.

It would be silly to back against him in his current form and he should be able to get Portugal over the line once more.

Denmark Vs France

Wednesday 27 June, 12:00am, Luzhniki Stadium

For both sides, a draw is enough to get them through to the knockout stage however both teams can top the group with a win.

France have the margin for error as a draw would let them finish on top and give them the presumably easier second round match against the Group D runner up.

A point is also good enough for Denmark to qualify however after defeating Peru and drawing with Australia, they will have at least a slim hope of upsetting France.

This will be the third meeting in the World Cup for these sides with France winning in 1998 and Denmark in 2002.

While both sides would happily take a win here, if it is even with 15 minutes remaining do not be surprised if the tempo is significantly reduced as both look to go into the Round of 16 in as close to one piece as possible.

Iceland Vs Croatia

Wednesday 27 June, 4:00am, Rostov Arena

Iceland are still in with a chance of progressing to the knockout stages however they will face what has turned out to be their toughest assignment in Croatia in this game.

With just one goal in this tournament it is imperative they find a way to break through a Croatian side yet to concede.

Despite some of the attacking talent on offer for Croatia, expect them to take a relatively conservative approach with a draw being all they need to finish on top of the group.

Expect Croatia to score a couple of times and Iceland struggle to keep up.

Nigeria Vs Argentina

Wednesday 27 June, 4:00am, Krestovsky Stadium

Argentina’s World Cup has gone about as poorly as possible as they sit on the bottom of the group after a calamitous showing against Croatia in their last outing.

Despite those issues, a win against Nigeria would be good enough for them to get through to knockout stages (barring an Icelandic miracle in the other game).

While his biggest rival Cristiano Ronaldo has shone at this tournament so far, Lionel Messi has been a huge disappointment however all could be forgiven if he can guide Argentina through here and into a knockout game against France.

Nigeria were excellent against Iceland and will trouble Argentina but it is just too hard to back against a player like Messi here.

Mexico Vs Sweden

Thursday 28 June, 12:00am, Central Stadium

Despite winning both of their matches, Mexico are not yet safely through to the Round of 16 and all their hard work could be undone with a loss here.

If the Swedish side can pull off a win, even by one goal, they would go ahead of Mexico on tiebreakers and if Germany defeat South Korea it could send Mexico down to third place.

Realistically though, they have played far too well to back against them so far with the likes of Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela shining in group play.

Mexico will not want to lose their momentum so expect them to come out all guns blazing trying to make it three from three.

Thursday 28 June, 12:00am, Kazan Arena

Germany have not looked anything like the side that won the World Cup four years ago, needing a piece of Toni Kroos magic to steal three points against Sweden.

Now against a South Korea side already eliminated they have a simple equation, win and they are in the knockout stages.

With one or both of Mexico and Sweden set to drop points in the concurrent match, Germany have a straightforward task.

Germany have won both meetings in the World Cup, taking it out in 1994 and 2002 and it is likely that they will make it three from three.

Serbia Vs Brazil

Thursday 28 June, 4:00am, Otkrytie Arena

Both sides are still able to go through to the knockout stage however after 90 minutes there is a real possibility that one will be on the plane home.

Brazil are on four points with Serbia on three, and with Switzerland lurking on four points as well as they take on the winless Costa Rica.

In their one previous meeting in a pre-2014 World Cup friendly, Brazil won 1-0 and while that result is good enough to make sure they go through to the knockout phase, a few more goals to ensure Switzerland could not overtake them might be on the cards as well.

Considering that the last time Brazil did not finish on top of their group was in the Second Group Stage of the 1982 World Cup, that streak should continue here.

Switzerland Vs Costa Rica

Thursday 28 June, 4:00am, Nizhny Novgorod Stadium

Despite currently sitting in third place in the group, Switzerland know that a win or draw here will put them into the knockout stage regardless of the Brazil-Serbia result.

A win would give them a chance to finish on top of the group however that may come with its own issue as they could find themselves facing Germany.

Costa Rica are yet to score a goal at this tournament and (at the time of writing) are one of just three teams that have not scored at this tournament.

While attacking is not their forte they will have almost no choice but to for it here since the best they can hope for is to finish on a high note.

Senegal Vs Colombia

Friday 29 June, 12:00am, Samara Arena

Both sides are still a chance of going through to the knockout stage and a draw could be enough for both teams to advance, however neither will be overly keen to leave it up to chance.

While Colombia sit a point below both Japan and Senegal, a draw and Japanese loss would put them through to the knockout phase on goal difference.

Colombia were favoured to finish on top of Group H and looked worthy of that status in their 3-0 demolition of Poland in the last match.

While there are some concerns about their consistency, they are not enough to back against here and should be able to win and get through to the Round of 16.

Japan Vs Poland

Friday 29 June, 12:00am, Volgograd Arena

Japan, like Senegal and Colombia have their future seemingly in their own hands as a draw guarantees them a place in the knockout stage and a win gives them a great chance to top the group.

They do not have a great historical record against Poland, winning just two of seven meetings and losing the other five, but their last match came in 2002 so you can almost treat this as a clean slate.

Japan have come into form at the right time however, with their current three match unbeaten run coming on the back of a five game winless streak.

Poland on the other hand are going the other way losing both World Cup matches including looking very off the pace against Colombia.

Look for Japan to take care of business and win not only this game, but top spot in Group H

England Vs Belgium

Friday 29 June, 4:00am, Samara Arena

A game that at one point promised so much, has lost a bit of lustre with England and Belgium looking to go into preservation mode ahead of the knockout stage.

Given that this is the final group match to be played, they will know who their Round of 16 opponents will be and can play the matchups as necessary.

A draw should be enough for England to finish on top of Group G (pending disciplinary records) and it would not be surprising to see this match be played at a lower pace than normal.

If this match carried slightly more meaning Belgium would be the play here but both sides will just be happy to get to the end of the match with no new injuries and suspensions.

Friday 29 June, 4:00am, Mordovia Arena

At the same time as England against Belgium, Group G’s other teams face off as both seek to leave Russia with at least a point to show for their efforts.

Both sides will have had this match circled as the game to target for a win so do not expect either side to hold back.

Throughout the tournament Tunisia have shown a bit more attacking verve however Panama have the ability to trouble them at set pieces.

In a game like this, back the better side and in this case Tunisia has the edge.
