The Magic Millions Guineas is a race that grows in prestige every single year and is one of a number of highlights at the Gold Coast this weekend.
Pierata will start the Magic Millions Guineas as a clear favourite, but his task was made much tougher when he was allocated the inside barrier draw.
Can Pierata overcome the inside barrier or will there be a Magic Millions Guineas upset? We have analysed every horse in the field and our complete 2018 Magic Millions Guineas tips can be found below.
Pierata is clearly the horse to beat in the Magic Millions Guineas and all the pressure is on Melbourne Cup winning jockey Corey Brown. He has improved each time that he has been seen at the races this preparation and he was nothing short of outstanding in the Vo Rogue Plate at Doomben. The big concern is the inside barrier draw and there is every chance that he could end up getting shuffled back in the early stages of the race. He will need plenty of luck in running to get the job done and that makes it tough to get him as short as his current price, but there is no doubt that he is the best horse in this field.
Goodfella was forced to get a long way back in the Vo Rogue Plate and he was able to find the line nicely to sneak into the placings. He maps to get a much better run into this race from barrier six and he should be able to settle in the first half of the field. The Snitzel colt is capable of a high-rating performance on his day – he won the Brian Crowley Stakes in the Spring – and he does offer a touch of value at the current price.
Whypeeo has recorded four wins from seven race starts and he was nothing short of outstanding when he beat Pierata to win the Gold Edition Plate. He was unable to replicate that performance in the Vo Rogue Plate, but they did ride him against his pattern. He does have the early speed required to cross this field and take up the running and if he does that he will give them something to catch. The $18 currently on offer is well and truly over the odds.
Curdled has only recorded one win from his nine race starts and he was never able to get into the race in the Vo Rogue Plate at Doomben last start. It is tough to see him improving enough to win this race.
Saint Patricks Day
Saint Patricks Day beat Group 1 winner Capital Gain to win the Dalrello Stakes as a two-year-old and he returned to winning form with a comfortable victory at the Sunshine Coast last start. This is a genuine step-up in class and he is one of the outsiders of this field for a reason.
Bel Sonic has done nothing wrong during his racing career to date and he has been sent to Queensland after he won the Ladbrokes VOBIS Gold Carat at The Valley in the lead-up to Christmas. He showed an impressive turn-of-foot to finish over the top of his rivals at The Valley and he is a horse with some upside.
Shogun Sun has raced fairly without being disgraced in the Gold Edition Plate and the Vo Rogue Plate, but he would need to go to another level to be a genuine contender in this race.
Arrestar does not have a great overall record and he has never shown anything to suggest that he is capable of winning a race of this quality.
Wild Heart returned to the races with a career best performance in the Wyong Magic Millions 3&4YO race and he has trialed since that win. He maps to get a lovely run into this race with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle and he could be the horse to benefit if Pierata does not have any luck in running.
Magnufighter is another horse that comes out of the Vo Rogue Plate. He did hit the line nicely to finish fifth in that race and he does have the benefit of Jamie Kah in the saddle. He is a better horse than his odds suggest and it would surprise to see him finish in the top five at the juicy price of $41.
There has always been plenty of hype around Calculated, but he has only recorded one win from six starts. He has been beaten as favourite in his past two race starts and he did look to have every chance last start at Royal Randwick. Hugh Bowman will likely get a long way back from the wide barrier draw and the current price does seem a touch of unders.
Pinch Passion was outclassed in the Vo Rogue Plate and he didn’t look up to this sort of company.
Smartedge has been a consistent performer since he made his racing debut and he was a touch unlucky when he was beaten as favourite last start. He does map to get a long way back from the wide barrier draw, but he is capable of reeling off some impressive closing sectionals. He will be flying home and is not the worst chance.
Cellargirl was placed at Group 1 level in the Flight Stakes during the 2017 Spring Racing Carnival, but she has been poor in both the Gold Edition Plate and the Vo Rogue Plate. She is racing like a tired horse.
Sasso Corbaro has recorded three wins on the trot and the market suggests that she is the main danger to Pierata. There has been plenty to like about the way that she has put away her rivals in her past two starts at Hawkesbury and Royal Randwick, but this is a genuine step-up in class. She will require a peach of a ride from Damien Oliver from the wide barrier draw and she is another horse that I am happy to take on at the current price.
Lady Of Crebilly
Lady Of Crebilly was good in the Twilight Glow Stakes at Ladbrokes Park and she did not have any luck in running last start at Royal Randwick. She is a filly that still does have upside, but she would need to find a few lengths of improvement.
