The 2018 Royal Randwick Guineas has attracted a star-studded field and it set to be one of the highlights of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
It is Kementari that is currently on top of our 2018 Royal Randwick Guineas betting market, but there is plenty of talent in this field and the Godolphin colt will not have things his own way.
Will Kementari claim a maiden Group 1 victory or will there be a Royal Randwick Guineas upset? We have analysed every horse in the field and our complete 2018 Royal Randwick Guineas tips can be found below.
Ace High is ticking along nicely and he has not been beaten far in the Expressway Stakes and the Hobartville Stakes. The High Chaparral colt will relish the step-up to a mile for the Royal Randwick Guineas, but the Rosehill Guineas does look like the ideal target for him.
Trapeze Artist will step-up to the mile for the first time in his racing career. He won well first-up in the Expressway Stakes before he couldn’t match the likes of Kementari, Pierata and D’argento in the Hobartville Stakes. He doesn’t give me the impression that he is screaming out for 1600 metres and I am happy to take him on in this contest.
Kementari is currently a clear favourite in our 2018 Royal Randwick Guineas betting market. He has done nothing wrong in either the Eskimo Prince Stakes or the Hobartville Stakes, but I can’t get him as short as his current price. An excellent ride from Glyn Schofield helped him win the Hobartville Stakes and both D’argento and Pierata made up plenty of ground late. I’m not sure that he has the same upside to improve up to 1600 metres as some of his rivals.
Age Of Fire
Age Of Fire has been sent to Australia after finishing second in the 2000 Guineas and winning the Levin Classic in New Zealand. There is no doubt that he is a promising colt and he doesn’t run a bad race, but this is a genuine step-up in class and he is yet to produce a performance that suggests that he is up to this level.
Pierata won both the Vo Rogue Plate and Magic Millions Guineas in the Summer before he returned to the races with an excellent effort in the Hobartville Stakes. There is no doubt that he is in this contest, but the inside barrier is not ideal and he will need a fair amount of luck in running. I definitely can’t rule him out, but he looks to have found his right price.
Sully returned to the races with a fairly plain effort in the CS Hayes Stakes and he is a run behind the majority of his rivals in this race. He didn’t perform at his best in the Spring until he got out to 2000 metres and the Rosehill Guineas does look like a better race for him.
Peaceful State is the x-factor in the Royal Randwick Guineas. He is on the quick back-up after finishing second behind Grunt in the Australian Guineas and the fact that he has already had a start over a mile is an advantage. The Animal Kingdom colt still has plenty of upside and he is a horse that definitely does appeal at his current price of $8.50.
Tangled was very poor first-up at Rosehill Gardens and this race is much tougher. You couldn’t possibly back him off his last start effort.
Capital Gain won the JJ Atkins during the 2017 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, but he has been unable to replicate that form since. He was never able to get into the race in the Hobartville Stakes and a repeat does look likely. He is going to be a tough horse for connections to place going forward.
D’argento is the horse to beat in the 2018 Royal Randwick Guineas. The So You Think colt started his racing career with three impressive wins and he went to another level when he savaged the line in the Hobartville Stakes. He ran the best closing sectionals in that race and the step-up to the mile will be ideal. The wide barrier draw isn’t an issue as he gets back anyway and that ensures Hugh Bowman will be able to find clear running. He has an outstanding turn-of-foot and he can finish over the top of his rivals late.
Siege Of Quebec
Siege Of Quebec was tough behind Kementari in the Eskimo Prince Stakes before he was one of the first horses beaten in the Hobartville Stakes. This race is tougher again and he looks to have found his right price.
Kaonic looked like a star in the making in the early stages of the Spring Racing Carnival, but he has been fairly disappointing in his two race starts this preparation. This is a huge step-up in class on the field that he faced last start at Rosehill Gardens and he would require a huge improvement to have any chance of winning this race.
Condor has recorded just the one race win from seven starts and this is a big step-up in class.
You have to respect the Chris Waller stable, but this does look like a serious throw at the stumps with Tangmere.
