Doomben Preview – Saturday 10th March

Race 1 - 12:17pm

Open Handicap (2200m)

Another heavy track to contend with at Doomben on Saturday and we kick off proceedings with the 2200m Open Handicap. The Chris Waller stable will saddle up three of the seven runners and there is little separating Carzoff, Xebec and Irish Optimism in the betting at All three have won on soft rated tracks but have no winning heavy track form. The Gary Duncan trained Magnatune is a four times winner on the heavy and the wet conditions could give the outsider a rough chance of upsetting the more fancied runners in the market.

Race 2 - 12:57pm

QTIS 2yo Handicap (1350m)

Gold Coast filly Mystic Mist comes to town after scoring her maiden win over 1300m on her home track last start. The Harold Norman trained filly handled the heavy track at the Gold Coast and will get similar conditions again and the 1350m will be no problem. Miss Sara is yet to win from five starts but has city form and did run second on a heavy track at Doomben in November. Nooks And Crannies comes to town for the first time but has been placed twice on a heavy track.

QTIS 3yo Handicap (1350m)

Umberto has been runner up at his last three starts and gets his chance to breakthrough for an overdue win at Doomben on Saturday. The Tony Gollan trained gelding is yet to tackle a rain affected track from nine race starts but his sire Not A Single Doubt is a prolific producer of wet trackers. Toowoomba colt Hang was a winner of his last three starts in the provincials before a spell but will find it tougher here. Robert Heathcote will saddle up two runners in the eight horse field and there will not be much between Trommelschlagen and Don’t Leave Me Out.

Race 5 - 12:47pm

Open Handicap (1350m)

The Chris Waller trained Fortensky has been ultra-consistent of late with three wins and two placings from his last five starts and has paid the penalty with the handicapper allocating him with the 58kg top weight, up 2kg on his last start second over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast. Toowoomba four year old Niccanova worked his way up through the grades during the 2017 Brisbane Winter Carnival before winning the Group 3 Fred Best Classic over 1400m at Eagle Farm and then finished third in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas over 1600m at Doomben. Flamboyer has had plenty of chances of late but has a good wet track record.

Class 3 Plate (1350m)

The lightly raced Let’s Party Marty is dropping back significantly in class after finishing fifth last start, three quarters of a length from the winner, in a 1350m Saturday Class 6 at Doomben. The David Vandyke trained three year old is the winner of two of his four race starts and looks hard to beat in this class. Suilven’s provincial form is hard to fault with two wins and a second from his last three starts and Every Single One is a last start winner over 1300m at the Gold Coast. Send Us A Sign might be one of the outsiders of the field but could be one for the exotics after scoring a three lengths win over 1200m on a heavy track at the Sunshine Coast at her latest outing.

Race 7 - 4:12pm

BenchMark 75 Handicap (1050m)

Live Fast has drawn the coveted number one barrier from the tricky 1050m start and will get his chance to go one better than his last start second over 1200m at Doomben. Apprenetice Taylor Marshall’s 2kg claim will come in very handy as well and the Tony Sears trained five year old is a winner on a heavy track. Jeff Lloyd’s mount Yarrapower was a last start winner over the same course and distance as Saturday’s contest, has drawn well at gate five and is also a two time winner on a heavy surface. The Tony Gollan trained Just Orm is also in the mix following his last start second over 1110m at Doomben and last start Toowoomba winner Apoloboom is certain to run a cheeky race from barrier two.

Race 8 - 4:50pm

1MW Handicap (1200m)

Inspired Estelle was a winner two starts back over the same course and distance as Saturday’s 1MW Handicap. The successful combination of trainer Toby Edmonds and jockey Jeff Lloyd team up again with Inspired Estelle and the Manhattan Rain mare will be among the main chances. Criquette is also rated highly in the pre-post betting at following her first up second over the same course and distance as this weekend’s race, but has to contend with a wide barrier. Real Ego heads back to town following his last start win over 1200m at The Gold Coast.

BenchMark 70 Handicap (1600m)

The Michael Costa trained Diamonds Are is the winner of his last three starts and has a great chance to stretch it to four wins on the trot in the 1600m BenchMark 70 Handicap. Diamonds Are heads back to Doomben following his win over 1630m on a rain affected track and has the advantage of the inside barrier. The Chris Waller trained Queen Of Heights looks well placed here with Jeff Lloyd in the saddle but has to overcome a wide barrier draw. Second emergency Sweet Adaline has already gained a spot in the field following several early scratchings and has each way claims if she can repeat her last start effort when second to Diamonds Are.
