The Victory Stakes is the first major race of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and headlines a big day of racing right around the country this weekend.
It is Impending that has opened as a dominant favourite in our 2018 Victory Stakes betting market and he is currently priced at $1.85 to make a winning return to the races.
Will Impending record another black-type race win or will there be a Victory Stakes upset?
We have analysed every horse in the Victory Stakes field and our tips can be found below.
There is no doubt that Impending is the class horse in this field and if he performs at anywhere near his best he will e very tough to beat. Impending won the Stradbroke Handicap in 2017 and he may not have won a race during the Spring, but his form was excellent – he was only narrowly denied by In Her Time in the Sydney Stakes before he finished third behind Redzel in the Darley Classic. That form is more than good enough to win a race of this quality and he is clearly the horse to beat.
Jungle Edge started his campaign with an excellent performance in the Challenge Stakes, but he has since failed to fire in both The Galaxy and the TJ Smith Stakes. He would need a wet track to be a genuine winning chance in this contest.
Most Important trialed well ahead of his return to the races, but his first-up record is poor and he normally requires a couple of runs before he is able to perform at his best. He will be better suited over 1350 metres.
Monsieur Gustave does run well fresh and he won the Keith Noud Quality first-up last preparation. This race is obviously tougher and I don’t see him beating the likes of Impending, but he can produce a better performance than his current odds suggest.
Supido is a consistent performer that generally rates at a very similar level. He ran well without ever looking like a winning chance in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, the Newmarket Handicap or the William Reid Stakes and this is obviously a drop in quality. He is likely to be the horse that benefits if Impending fails to fire.
Privlaka was well beaten last start at the Sunshine Coast and looks outclassed in this sort of company.
Havasay has been in career best form over the past 12 months, but this is a new level for him and I don’t think he will be up to it.
Manaya has been scratched from the 2018 Victory Stakes.
I Am Excited
I Am Excited is a filly that still has plenty of upside and she is the main danger to Impending in the Victory Stakes. She recorded three impressive wins on the trot during her Autumn campaign and she was not disgraced when she finished third in the Arrowfield Sprint. She is a filly that still has plenty of upside and it will be interesting to see how she fares at this level.
