Kristyna Pliskova vs Serena Williams
This will be just the third tournament back for Serena Williams after having a baby and she will take on the 26 year old Czech left hander for the first time. This will mark her return to the French Open with her last outing in 2016 ending with a run to the final. Since 2007, Williams has won nine of ten first round matches and six of those in straight sets. While she may still be finding her feet on her return to the tour she should be good enough to handle this match.
Frances Tiafoe vs Sam Querrey
The second meeting between Querrey and Tiafoe in an all American first round matchup. Querrey took the first meeting between these players last year in straight sets in Shanghai but this is Tiafoe’s best season of his career with a 15-8 record and 5-3 on clay in 2018. Querrey is playing just his third match on the surface this year and is trying to improve on a career 46-59 record there. This has the makings of a close game, but Tiafoe is in form and should be able to advance.
Danielle Rose Collins vs Caroline Wozniacki
The Danish former world number one comes into this match with a desire to back up her Australian Open title from January. Only twice in her career has she failed to get out of the first round including her debut in 2007 and in 2014. In every other season she has made it out of the first round and should have no trouble against an opponent making her first appearance at this tournament.
