Daily Sports Tips – Monday 4th June
Simona Halep vs Elise Mertens
Simona Halep to Win 2-0
The world number one has picked up six straight sets after dropping the first set of the tournament. These two met a month ago in the Madrid Open with Halep cruising to a comfortable 6-3 6-0 victory and a nice confidence boost ahead of this tournament. Mertens struggled in her first match but has confidently dispatched her last two opponents but Halep is the top seed for a reason here and that will push her over the edge here.
John Isner vs Juan Martin Del Potro
Juan Martin Del Potro to Win -2.5 Games
To literal giants face off in the men’s draw with the (comparatively) diminutive Del Potro at 198cm as a slight favourite ahead of the 208cm Isner. The Argentine has the head to head edge at 6-4 despite never meeting on his favoured surface of clay, which, as we all know is what the French Open is played on. This could very well go the distance with both players armed with strong serves, both have won at least 85% of games on their serve this year. However you give the edge to the player that is more comfortable and that is Del Potro here.
Serena Williams vs Maria Sharapova
Serena Williams to Win 2-0
In the most anticipated match of the French Open so far, the long time rivals face off for the first time since Sharapova’s return from suspension and Williams’s return from maternity leave. Williams has a decided advantage in this match up holding a 19-2 head to head record including the last 18 times. There is plenty of head to head value on offer here however the last seven have also been won in straight sets by Williams so that is the play here.
