2018 Winter Stakes Day Preview


Race 1 - 11:35am

2yo Handicap (1400m)

The two year olds will step out for the first race on the nine event Winter Stakes Day race card at Rosehill with last start winner Master Ash as one of the main chances. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt is stepping up to Saturday class after winning a mid-week Canterbury Maiden. The Mat Dunn trained The Fire Trap is the winner of two of his three race starts and heads to Rosehill on the back of a victory at the Sunshine Coast. Laburnum and Tactical Formation have both been placed at their latest outings.

Race 2 - 12:10pm

Class 6 Handicap (1100m)

Rekindled Force is the winner of two of his three race starts and looks well suited resuming here. The Redoute’s Choice three year old has the blinkers on for the first time, has drawn the rails and has the services of Group 1 winning jockey Tim Clark. Highway Sixtysix was a last start winner of a similar class race at Randwick and is among the chances again. Roman Typhoon has the winkers on and Petra Jewel comes to the city following a convincing win at Tamworth.

Race 3 - 12:45pm

BenchMark 75 Handicap (1800m)

Trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman combine with Jolly Honour who is going for back to back wins after a last start win over 2000m at Randwick and will be hard to beat again. Stablemate Asterius is chasing a hat trick after wins at Kembla Grange and Rosehill. Laussel and Monsieur Sisu are both stepping up to Saturday class after wins at Canterbury.

Race 4 - 1:20pm

BenchMark 81 Handicap (1100m)

Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman team up again with last start Gold Coast winner In Times Of War. The Street Cry mare will get a nice run from barrier two and will get every chance to make it back to back wins. Difficult To Get just missed a place last start when fourth last start and has won over this course and distance in the past. Alassio is stepping up Saturday class as a winner of all her three race starts at Kembla Grange, Wyong and on the Kensington Track and is also among the top chances.

Race 5 - 1:55pm

BenchMark 80 Handicap (1200m)

Bratislava has a good fresh record and will give this a shake first up. Bratislava has had a break since his last start fifth at Rosehill in February but has had two barrier trials to get ready for his return. Level Eight is also resuming and hasn’t missed a place from five first up attempts. Star Of Monsoon had consistent form before a break and Smartedge has been around the minor prizemoney recently.

Race 6 - 2:30pm

BenchMark 80 Handicap (2000m)

The A Team of Chris Waller and Hugh Bowman are back together with Mutarakem stepping up to the 2000m after winning over 1900m last start at Canterbury. Looks suited here and is one of the main chances. Stablemate Raqeeq will be suited by the step up in distance to the 2000m and Melbourne trainer Ciaron Maher has brought English import Al Galayel north after being placed at Caulfield over 1600m. Sweet Victory has each way claims.

Race 7 - 3:10pm

Winter Stakes (1400m)

The Patrick Payne trained Chamois Road is another border hopper and is chasing a hat trick after wins at Morphettville and Flemington and looks well placed here from barrier two in the capacity field. The consistent Special Missile is well overdue for a win with three placings from his last four starts and has also drawn in close. Dreamforce is also a consistent competitor but has drawn out wide and Invinzabeel has been placed at his last two starts.

Race 8 - 3:50pm

BenchMark 92 Handicap (1200m)

Plenty of chances in the BenchMark 92 Handicap with trainer James Cummings saddling up three runners, all with chances. Drachenfels had superb restricted class form before a break and has won one of his two recent barrier trials. Flow and Old North share the top weight of 60kg and both are capable of finding the winner’s stall. Easy Eddie and Albumin are both last start Rosehill winners.

Race 9 - 4:30pm

BenchMark 85 Handicap (1500m)

The Chris Waller trained High Mist is heading for a hat trick of wins after victories on the Kensington Track and on the Randwick main track and has the services of Hugh Bowman. Waller will also saddle up the lightweight chance Sparky Lad while his stablemate The Avenger has to overcome a wide barrier. Dalmatia Prince is stepping up to Saturday class after a Canterbury mid-week win and will get a good run from an inside barrier with his light weight.
