Race 1 - 12:05pm

Victory Vein Plate (1000m)

The majority of the Victory Vein Plate field will be making their racing debuts and that makes this a tough race to analyse from a betting perspective. Speedycom showed genuine speed to win a barrier trial at Randwick by four lengths and we know how good Gai Waterhouse is with two-year-olds. Tommy Berry should be able to take Speedycom straight to the front and he will give his rivals something to catch.

Race 2 - 1:05pm

Highway Handicap (1400m)

This is a typically tough edition of the Highway Handicap and it is no surprise that the market has come up $7 a field. Luck in running will prove vital in this contest and the wet track is also likely to have an impact. It is impossible to bet into this race with any real confident and I am happy to stay out.

Race 3 - 1:40pm

Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m)

This is one of the toughest races of the day at Royal Randwick and there are a stack of winning chances. You can make a case for Cristobal, I’m So Sweet, Bubbles’n’troubles and Unguarded and all four look to have found their right price. I am more than happy to stay out of this contest from a betting perspective.

Race 4 - 2:15pm

The Star Mile (1600m)

Kaonic was not disgraced when he finished fourth in the Cameron Handicap and this is a genuine drop in class. The wide barrier draw isn’t an issue as he gets back anyway and that could be the place to be on a heavy Royal Randwick track. No horse in this field has as much upside.

A horse that appeals at big odds is Sense Of Occasion. It has been an age since he fired a shot, but there is an argument to be made that he is one of the best wet-trackers in the entire country. He has trialed well ahead of this contest and I am happy to take a gamble at the big price.

The Kosciuszko (1200m)

The Kosciuszko is an excellent concept and this is set to be a fascinating betting race. I think that the market does have it just about right and it looks like a genuine race in three between The Monstar, Victorem and Don’t Give A Damn. This is the easiest race that The Monstar has contested in some time and he does look well-placed against this type of company. The majority of his best form has come in the wet and he is a horse that does make his own luck right on the speed. There really isn’t much between the top three in betting and at the price, I’m with The Monstar.

Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m)

The Sydney Stakes is a very open race and there are a host of winning chances, but I am very keen on Clearly Innocent at his current price of $13. It has been a while since he fired, but his best form gives him a genuine edge over the rest of this field and his form in the wet is nothing short of outstanding.

The difference in price between him and Jungle Edge is nothing short of ridiculous and there has to be a query over Pierata coming back from the mile. The wide barrier draw should actually be an advantage by this stage of the afternoon.

Race 7 - 4:15pm

The Everest (1200m)

You won’t find many more fascinating betting races than The Everest. The market suggests that this really is anybody’s races and I can confidently make a case for just about every single runner in the field. The two horses that do appeal at their current odds are Vega Magic and Le Romain.

Vega Magic should have won this race 12 months ago and Lindsay Park have given him a very similar preparation in 2018. He absolutely bolted in and ran serious time first-up in the Bletchingly Stakes and he wasn’t disgraced when he just ran out of steam late in the Memsie Stakes. The freshen-up, the drop back to 1200 metres and the fact that the blinkers go back on all suit and he has the upside to blow the rest of this field away.

The barrier draw wasn’t kind to Le Romain and the pressure will be on Glyn Schofield, but I still think that $21 is well and truly over the odds. His 1200 metres form is actually excellent fresh and the wet Royal Randwick track brings him right into this race. He produced the best performance of his career when he beat Chautauqua to win the 2017 Canterbury Stakes and that sort of performance would see him go very close in this race. The $6.20 for him to finish in the placings is an excellent bet.

Race 8 - 4:50pm

Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m)

The Craven Plate is another very interesting betting race. Egg Tart was left a bit flat-footed by Ace High in the Hill Stakes, but the wet track is ideal for her and this is her chance to return to winning form. She has recorded three wins from as many starts on rain-affected going and it was at this stage last campaign that she really came into her own.

I’m happy to give Comin’ Through another chance after a flat effort in the Underwood Stakes. This is a genuine drop in class and his form before that run had been solid. He generally produces his best in Sydney and the wet track shouldn’t be an issue – his half-brother Criterion was one of the best wet-trackers in recent memory.

Race 9 - 5:35pm

St Leger Stakes (2600m)

One Foot In Heaven has been ticking along nicely this campaign and gets his chance to breakthrough for a maiden win in Australia in the St Leger Stakes. He chased home Ace High, It’s Somewhat and Egg Tart in the Hill Stakes and there are no horses of that quality in this field. All his best form in Europe was on soft going and he does have more upside than the majority of this field. He maps to get a dream run in transit and this is his chance to return to winning form.

Race 10 - 5:30pm

Cellarbrations Sprint (1000m)

Godolphin have a very strong hand in this race and it is Revenire that appeals at his current price. Revenire raced well without winning at the end of his last campaign and he has recorded two wins from as many starts over 1000 metres. His first-up record is excellent and he is well-placed to make a winning return to the races.
