The World Last Time Winx Lost a Race

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusmail

It has been 1292 days since Winx last lost a race. Gust Of Wind beat her in the AJC Oaks at Royal Randwick in April 2015. She did not win a race after that. Winx, well she has gone on to record 28 straight wins including three Cox Plates and 21 group 1s.

The world was a very different place when Winx was losing races.

Donald Trump was just a reality TV star

Trump didn’t officially announce his intention to run for the White House until June 16th of 2015 but he most certainly was canvassing the faithful on Twitter (of all places) about a run for the presidency.

Trump was also enjoying watching the US Masters Golf on TV according to his Tweets at the time.

Of course, at the time we all thought that this was just a publicity stunt and the Donald would move on to another series of the Apprentice. We were wrong.

Tony Abbott was Prime Minister

That’s right, there have been three Prime Minister’s during Winx’s magical 28 race winning streak and when she first won a race old mate Tony Abbott was PM.

Back in April 2015, Abbott had survived his first leadership spill against no one back February of that year 61-39 (39 people in the Liberal Party wanted a chair to be leader over Abbott back then) and was just a humble prime minister waiting for someone to knife him later on.

He was also getting ready for his annual “Pollie Pedal” with his mate, Liberal MP Kevin Andrews and in the bike lycra as opposed to budgie smugglers and struggling to gain ground in the polls.

The Thought Of Clubs Like the Western Bulldogs and Richmond winning the AFL Grand Final was a Fantasy.

It wasn’t that long ago when Footscray/Western Bulldogs had only won one flag back in 1954 and the poor old Tiges had won only two finals games since 1982 (less than Fitzroy) and a premiership drought dating back to 1980. With the Hawks coming off back-to-back flags and on their way to a threepeat if you had said the next two clubs to win the AFL Grand Final would be the Western Bulldogs and Richmond we would have had a good old laugh.

And here’s a quirk – on the day Winx last lost a race, Richmond played the Western Bulldogs that afternoon at the MCG. The Doggies beat the Tigers by 19 points with new coach Luke Beveridge enjoying wins in his first two games as Bulldogs coach.

Mick Malthouse was coach of Carlton

Malthouse at the beginning of his third season as coach of the Blues and they had suffered a humiliating loss to West Coast at Subiaco on the Friday night before Winx last lost a race.

The Blues had gotten off to a flyer kicking 6.1 to the Eagles 4.1 in the first quarter but dropped off completely for the rest of the game with former Blue Josh Kennedy tearing them apart kicking 10 goals as West Coast handed out a 69 point thrashing to Carlton.

It was also the first of five Friday night thumpings involving Carlton in the 2015 season and his press conference that night gave all the indications that the Blues were in for a long season.

Malthouse would be sacked as coach of Carlton six weeks later.

Grand Marshall won the Sydney Cup  and Criterion won the Queen Elizabeth

On the same day that Winx last lost a race, Grand Marshall won the Sydney Cup at a HUGE $41. It would be his only Group 1 victory although he would go on to win the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup in 2016. Grand old stayer Who Shot TheBarman ran a gallant second. He would go on to win the race in 2018 at the ripe old age of 9.

Criterion won the Queen Elizabeth that day. Lucia Valentina won it the year after. No other horse has won it since.

Chelsea won the EPL and Leicester struggled.

In a surprise to absolutely nobody, Chelsea was cruising to yet another Premier League title comfortably ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal. Leicester City was in a relegation battle under Nigel Pearson and would just be happy playing in the Premier League in the next season… let alone winning the whole damn thing.

“Bills” by LunchMoneyLewis Was  Topping The Charts

That’s right the number one song in Australia when Winx last lost a race was the LunchMoneyLewis classic “Bills”. A song about needing to pay bills. What a tune it is.

North Queensland Cowboys hadn’t yet won a Premiership

It was Round six of the 2015 NRL season when Winx last lost a race. Ben Hunt scored a golden try in what was an outstanding win for the Broncos over the Roosters that Friday night in a game that was made famous by the showdown between Sam Thaiday and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

For the Cowboys, who would go on to win the premiership they smashed the then reigning premiers South Sydney 30-12 the following Monday night with Jonathan Thurston cementing his place at the best player in the NRL at the time putting Greg Inglis back in his place.

He would famously kick the field goal in golden point time to win the Cowboys their first NRL premiership later that year.

Jarryd Hayne had a promising career at the San Francisco 49ers ahead of him

Noted cross-code superstar Jarryd Hayne was in the midst of chasing his dream of playing the NFL. In April 2015, he was on San Francisco’s 90-man preseason roster learning the intricacies of playing running back and punt returner with a long, bright future ahead of him with the five-time NFL Champions.
