Facebooktwittermail

Group D brings us one of the most anticipated rematches from the 2015 tournament with Iran and Iraq set to face off, likely with top spot in the group on the line.

Iran

Three time champions Iran come into this tournament as one of the favourites in 2019 and would love to do so in the UAE.

Qualification

Iran qualified for the Asian Cup by winning Group D in the second round with an unbeaten record ahead of Oman, Turkmenistan, Guam and India.

Group Winner Odds

Iran to Win Group D – $1.29

Biggest Game

Iran and Iraq played out one of the best games of the 2015 Asian Cup with a match featuring plenty of skill, drama and controversy. Both sides will want to put down a big statement when they face off with the knockout stages beckoning.

Asian Cup Odds

Iran to Win the Asian Cup – $5.00

Overall Preview

Iran are one of Asia’s premiere sides and know how to produce against its continental rivals. That has them as tournament co-favourites and deservedly so, but how will they respond to the expectation? If you do like them to win the tournament, you may be better off backing Iran to win or advance in each individual game rather than taking the short price on offer.

Iraq

12 years removed from their unlikely triumph in 2007, Iraq will make its ninth appearance in the continental championship this year looking for a second title.

Qualification

Iraq was drawn into Group F in the second round of qualifying and finished second behind Thailand, advancing to the tournament as one of the best runner up sides.

Group Winner Odds

Iraq to Win Group D – $3.60

Biggest Game

Take everything mentioned in the Iran preview about its biggest game and copy it to here. If this game can match the intensity of their clash in Canberra then we will be in for a treat. They will have their first chance at a statement game when they play Vietnam first up however.

Asian Cup Odds

Iraq to Win the Asian Cup – $15

Overall Preview

Iraq is one of the sides nobody will want to overlook come the knockout stage. They will be a tough out and are a side that plays well and truly above their 88th ranking. We have seen them go on a miracle run before and while that is probably going to be too much, a tough quarter final exit is on the cards once more.

Vietnam

Vietnam is preparing for its fourth Asian Cup, returning to the tournament for the first time since co-hosting in 2007.

Qualification

Vietnam is finished in third place in a four team Group F in the second round of qualifying behind Thailand and Group D opponents Iraq. In those matches against Iraq they drew 1-1 at home and lost away to the Iraqis. Having finished as Group C runners up in the third round of qualifying on the back of holding all three opponents scoreless at home, the Vietnamese side advanced to the Asian Cup.

Group Winner Odds

Vietnam to Win Group D – $34

Biggest Game

Vietnam will expect to come away with at least a win when they take on Yemen in their final group game. By that stage both sides will likely be just playing for pride however if results go the right way, there may be a spot in the knockouts still on the cards.

Asian Cup Odds

Vietnam to Win the Asian Cup – $251

Overall Preview

Out of all the sides in the Asian Cup, you could be forgiven for overlooking Vietnam and it is hard to see them having much luck against their more fancied rivals. If you want to bet on their games, look to back against them if there is any value on offer.

Yemen

The lowest ranked side in the Asian Cup, the Yemeni side will make their Asian Cup debut under their current banner.

Qualification

Yemen had one of the more dramatic qualification runs in the third round of qualifying, only making the tournament on the final day. Yemen went into the day level on points with Tajikistan and needed an 84th minute penalty to get past Nepal while their rivals were beaten 2-1 by the Philippines thanks to a 91st minute penalty giving them a spot in the tournament.

Group Winner Odds

Yemen to Win Group D – $51

Biggest Game

No soft landing for Yemen with their opening match coming against one of the favourites in Iran, it will be a sight to behold… at least until Iran look to put up a rugby score.

Asian Cup Odds

Yemen to Win the Asian Cup – $501

Overall Preview

You always try to find something to look forward to with these unfavoured nations in the group stage, but in the case of Yemen, there really is not anything worth getting overly invested in, the question for them is just how many goals will they ship in their games.
