2019 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes Preview

The 2019 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes headlines a big day of racing at Flemington on Saturday and is set to be a very open betting affair.

Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Sunlight has opened as favourite in Black Caviar Lightning Stakes betting, but this field is packed full of quality and there are a host of winning chances.

We have analysed all 11 runners and our complete 2019 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes tips can be found below.

Osborne Bulls

Osborne Bulls is coming off a Spring Racing Carnival campaign where he established himself as a genuine Group 1 quality sprinter. He finished third behind Redzel and Trapeze Artist in The Everest before he produced an explosive closing sectional to win at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day. There is no doubt that he enjoys the Flemington straight and he is a proven winner, but the question mark is definitely 1000 metres. This will be his first race start over this distance and it is likely that he will be giving his rivals a decent start.

Battle Hero

Battle Hero has been sent from Perth to contest the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. He has been a consistent sprinter in Perth and he has recorded seven wins at black-type level, but in his two previous starts at Group 1 level he has been a touch outclassed. I don’t think that he has the upside to win a Group 1 of this quality.

There has always been plenty of hype surrounding Glenall and he has never really lived up to it. He has failed to finish in the placings in his fourth previous starts at Group level and he failed to beat Belwazi when he finished second over this exact track and distance in the Kensington Stakes last start. The Redoute’s Choice entire has never shown anything to suggest that he is capable of winning at this level.

In Her Time

In Her Time is the value runner in our Black Caviar Lightning Stakes betting market. She failed to win a race during the Spring, but she was excellent in both the Premiere Stakes and the VRC Sprint Classic, while the race wasn’t run to suit in The Everest. Her best form does give her a genuine edge over the rest of this field, 1000 metres will not be a problem for her and she has recorded four wins from her seven first-up starts. She is the horse to beat and great value at her current odds of $6.50.

It has been 18 months since Missrock recorded a race win and he recent form has been fairly lacklustre. Her record over 1000 metres is sound, but she is an outsider in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes for a reason.

Divine Quality

Divine Quality has been set for a first-up tilt at the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. She showed an electric turn-of-foot to win the Furphy Sprint at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, but that was something of a spike performance and this is a tougher assignment. The Newmarket Handicap does seem like a better race for her.

Written By

Written By returned to the races with a second place finish behind Bons Away in the W.J. Adams Stakes at Caulfield and this is a genuine step-up in quality. You can’t knock his record, he has recorded six wins from nine race starts, and he wasn’t beaten far by Sunlight in the Coolmore Stud Stakes. In saying that, he would need to improve signficantly from his first-up effort and he is a horse that I am happy to oppose at his current Black Caviar Lightning Stakes odds.

Graff might be the x-factor in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes field. He started the Spring with a high-rating win in the San Domenico Stakes and he finished in the placings in both the Run To The Rose and the Golden Rose Stakes before he wasn’t disgraced against the older horses in The Everest. I’m got a strong opinion of the horse and he is a serious talent, but he has been well-found by the market and I can’t get him as short as his current odds.

Lean Mean Machine

Lean Mean Machine is something of an enigma. He is capable of a very high-rating performance on his day, as we saw when he won The Run To The Rose in the Spring, but he is also prone to throwing in a stinker. Sunlight did beat him home in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, but he has always given the opinion that he might be a better horse with more seasoning and his two recent barrier trials have been strong. It definitely would not surprise if he was able to go to another level this campaign and claim a maiden win at Group 1 level.

Sunlight looks set to start the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes as a clear betting favourite. She has delivered the goods as both a two-year-old and a three-year-old and she showed just how good she is when she upstaged Zousain and Lean Mean Machine to win the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Victoria Derby Day. There is no doubt a repeat of that performance would put her right in the mix in this contest and she may still have improvement left in her, but she is another horse that I can’t quiet get as short as her current price.

Jedastar is set to have just her third race start and will carry only 44 kilograms in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. There is no doubt that this is a throw at the stumps for Lloyd Kennewell and history suggests that it will be very tough for her to win this contest. She clearly enjoys the Flemington straight and 1000 metres is her ideal trip, but it is incredibly difficult for such a young and inexperienced horse to match with her older and more seasoned rivals.
