2019 French Open Preview

The clay court action heats up on Sunday (AEDT) as the 2019 French Open takes centre stage from Roland Garros.

Defending champs Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep headline the betting this year, but after a thrilling Australian Open back in January, we could be in for a major upset at the second Grand Slam tournament of the year.

With plenty of juicy double-digit odds on offer, we’ve gone ahead and previewed all the favourites and a few value plays, so read on below for our entire 2019 French Open Preview.

2019 French Open Men's Best Bet

Rafael Nadal @ $1.83

The odds aren’t much chop, but it’s difficult to look past Rafael Nadal after last week’s thrilling three-set win over Novak Djokovic in the Italian Open.

The 11-time champ returns to Roland Garros to defend his crown, and although reoccurring knee problems could put a dampener on the tournament, Nadal’s form of late suggests he’ll be in the final for the 12th time.

Prior to last week’s success over Djokovic, Nadal found himself in the Semi-Final against Stefanos Tsitsipas in Madrid losing in three sets. He sought revenge a week later winning in straight sets in Rome, but after missing out on a 12th title in Barcelona and Monte Carlo, Nadal will certainly have revenge on his mind over the next fortnight.

The last time we saw Nadal in a major was at the Australian Open back in January, where he was no match for Djokovic in the final. There’s plenty of missed opportunities for the clay court expert to make up for, and after dominating at Roland Garros for the better part of 15 years, keep it simple and back Nadal.

2019 French Open Men's Best Value

Roger Federer @ $26.00

The clay court has never been a strong point of Federer’s game, hence the reason he’s set to make his first appearance at Roland Garros since 2015.

Still, the 20-time Grand Slam champion is always a chance no matter where he plays, and after reaching the quarter-final in Rome and Madrid, everything is stacking up for another classic Federer performance in the finals.

The best part about all this is Federer’s dominance over Nadal. Since 2017, the Fed Express has won five straight matches against Nadal.

2019 French Open Women's Best Bet

Naomi Osaka @ $15.00

The World No. 1 looks way over the odds at this price as she hunts down her third Grand Slam title.

This year’s Australian Open champion heads to Roland Garros on the heels of back-to-back quarter-final losses in Madrid and Rome and looks a strong chance to run deep into the finals in a very competitive women’s division.

There’s also a strong chance we see the Japanese sensation meet up with three-time French Open winner Serena Williams in the quarter-finals. Defending champ and clay court expert Simona Halep also poses a chance, but after a quiet few months, this is Osaka’s time to shine.

2019 French Open Women's Best Value

Petra Kvitova @ $17.00

Kvitova is currently fourth in the WTA’s clay court rankings after winning the Stuttgart Open over Anett Kontaveit back in April. The 29-year-old remained competitive in Madrid and Rome this month and has plenty of experience and upside on the surface to make a big run. Kvitova’s best French Open result came in 2012 when she reached the Semi-Final, but after losing the Australian Open earlier this year, you can bet she’s had her sights set on a bounce-back at Roland Garros.
