Doomben Preview – Saturday 10th August


Race 1 - 11:28am

Open Handicap (2200m)

Anderson Heathcote Racing have two strong chances in the first with last start winners Boom Boom Epic and Our Mantra. Boom Boom Epic is stepping up to the 2200m for the first time but was strong at the end of the 1840m at Eagle Farm while Our Mantra will appreciate a 5.5kg drop in weight as he chases a hat trick after wins at Eagle Farm (2200m) and Doomben (2000m). Exoteric is dropping back from the 3200m of the Queensland Cup and Master Zephyr will have no problem with the trip.

Race 2 - 12:03pm

Class 4 Plate (1350m)

Beau Arrow made up some ground last start in Class 6 company and is a two times winner at Doomben and is among the main chances. The Tax Accountant hasn’t been far off the pace of late but needs luck from an awkward barrier. Bobby Axelrod is a last start winner at Beaudesert and Sugar Buzz is coming off a Gatton win.

Race 3 - 12:38pm

BenchMark 75 Handicap (1050m)

Trainer Lindsay Gough has pointed us in the right direction with Oradonna after scratching the mare from Race 5 and choosing to run her here. Just Orm has had a freshen up and heads into Saturday’s race on the back of a second in a Doomben barrier trial. Italia Bella is resuming and has also trialled recently for a second and a win and High Cost is a two times winner over this course and distance.

QTIS 3yo Handicap (1200m)

Ginger Rock broke through for his maiden win at his second race start over 1200m at Eagle Farm and steps out as one of the main chances again. Champagne Jet has been placed at her last four outings and is certain to be in the mix again. Spirit Esprit is resuming after a break following his win at the Sunshine Coast and Xanthus was placed twice at Doomben in February and March and is also resuming.

F&M 0MW Handicap (1200m)

Epic Girl is overdue for a win after placings at her last three starts and gets her chance here. Jim Byrne and Tony Gollan team up with Ponytales first up and they are always a force. Precipitate has been around the money of late with a Gold Coast win three starts back followed by a Doomben second and a fourth at Eagle Farm while Tardis has also been ultra-consistent with two wins and three placings from her last five starts.

Race 6 - 2:27pm

C,G&E 0MW Handicap (1200m)

All Important was back in the winner’s stall again last start over this course and distance at a recent mid-week meet and has strong claims back up to Saturday class. Ignite The Light is fitter for one run back and is a three times winner over the Doomben 1200m course. Fomo will get a nice run from the rails draw and Unlikely Story can improve on his first up fourth at Eagle Farm.

Race 7 - 3:07pm

BenchMark 70 Handicap (1630m)

Galtero has drawn the rails from this tricky start and apprentice Baylee Nothdurft will give the gelding every chance. Great Powers has been placed at her last three outings at Ipswich, the Sunshine Coast and Eagle Farm and has also drawn a handy gate. Yamazaki made up some ground from the back at the end of the 1600m at Eagle Farm last start and Charlie Cat will appreciate apprentice Jed Hodge’s 3kg claim.

Race 8 - 3:47pm

Open Handicap (1630m)

The Chris Waller trained Torgerson pops up when least expected and has the ability to cause an upset here. Silvera is racing in peak form with wins at his last two starts in the Rockhampton Cup and in the Tattersall’s Mile and will carry an extra 2.5kg for his efforts. Prioritise will meet Silvera better at the weights after finishing fifth to him and Morendi was back amongst the minor prizemoney with a last start second at Eagle Farm at huge odds.

Race 9 - 4:27pm

Class 6 Plate (1350m)

Jim Byrne will give Tokoriki Lad every chance from the inside gate and the five year old will have the opportunity to go one better than his last start second at Eagle Farm. Auerbach has put two wins together in the past but will need luck from an awkward barrier draw. Impasse is resuming after a short break and did win a recent Gold Coast barrier trial and Churning is a winner over the same course and distance.
