Newcastle - Race 5 3:25pm AEST

No. 6 Wren's Day

Wren’s Day was a little bit disappointing when he made his racing debut in the Spring Carnival Preview, but he is a much better horse than that performance suggests. His best form in Europe gives him a genuine class edge over the rest of this field, he finished second behind Cracksman in the Prix Ganay in France, and his trial between race starts was excellent.

Newcastle - Race 6 4:05pm AEST

No. 14 Asiago

Asiago is well and truly over the odds at her current price of $11. She showed a lovely turn-of-foot to score a maiden race win at Hawkesbury first-up and there is the chance that she has gone to another level this campaign. She will settle in the second half of the field again, but she will be storming home late.

Newcastle - Race 7 4:40pm AEST

No. 1 Red Cardinal

Australian Bloodstock have the dominant favourite in the Newcastle Gold Cup in the form of Our Candidate, but I am keen to take him on with Red Cardinal. He has only recorded the one race win in Australia, but he does produce his best form in the wet and his first-up win in the Parramatta Cup in the Autumn was outstanding. He will get a long way back in the run, but he will be storming home late.

Newcastle - Race 8 5:20pm AEST

No. 2 Pohutukawa

Pohutukawa is the class horse in the Tibbie Stakes field and should prove too good for her rivals. She beat a stronger field than this to win the Kembla Grange Classic in the Autumn and she wasn’t beaten far in races like the Surround Stakes, Queensland Guineas and the Tattersall’s Tiara. James McDonald will ride her with plenty of confidence and give her every possible chance.
