Race 1 - 6:30pm

MSC Signs Handicap (1000m)

This is a tough way to start the night for punters and there are a host of winning chances. This isn’t a race that I want to get too heavily involved in, but a horse that does represent good value is Dane Clipper. She was very tough at Flemington last start and she was found to be suffering from the thumps. Jamie Kah can take her straight to the front in the early stages of the race and she will prove tough to run down late.

Race 2 - 7:00pm

Chandler Macleod VOBIS Gold Star (1500m)

Widgee Turf is clearly the class horse in this field, but the question is whether you want to dive in at the current price of $2.20. He found the line strongly to finish third behind Begood Toya Mother and Age Of Chivalry in the Ladbrokes Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes before he never really got into the race in the Toorak Handicap. The Turffontein gelding has a surprisingly strong record at The Valley, he has recorded three wins from his seven starts at the venue, and he should get a lovely run in transit with Billy Egan in the saddle.

Race 3 - 7:30pm

The Westin Melbourne Handicap (2040m)

Morton’s Fork has been racing well without winning this campaign and he gets his chance to breakthrough in this contest. He ran strong closing sectionals to finish third behind Looks Like Elvis in the Makers Mark Handicap at Eagle Farm and he ran well again in the Port Macquarie Cup. The former Godolphin galloper appeals at his current price in what is an open betting race.

Race 4 - 8:00pm

Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge Heat 3 (955m)

Fill The Flute is excellent value at her current odds in Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge betting. She has recorded two wins from her three race starts in this series in the past and she has recorded four wins from her eight race starts over 1000 metres or shorter. The Statue Of Liberty mare has speed to burn and Jamie Mott should be able to take her straight to the front in the early stages of the race. There is no doubt that she will give her rivals something to chase.

Race 5 - 8:30pm

Seppelt Wines Handicap (2040m)

Oceanex has been her own worst enemy this campaign and I couldn’t get her anywhere near as short as her current price. The horse that appeals is Greysful Glamour. There was plenty of merit in her last start effort in Sydney, it was better than it looks on paper, and The Valley does seem like it will suit her.

Race 6 - 9:00pm

Sweeney Estate Agents Handicap (1200m)

William Thomas returned to the races with an excellent win over Lyre and Inn Keeper first-up at Caulfield and he wasn’t really suited by the drop back to 1000 metres in the Apache Cat Classic. He still ran some of the fastest closing sectionals in that contest and the step-up to 1200 metres is ideal for him. He will need some luck in running, but he is well-placed to return to winning form.

Race 7 - 9:30pm

Group 1 Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m)

Bivouac is right up there with the best horses in the country at the moment and he is clearly the horse to beat in the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes. His only defeat this campaign came on a wet track in the San Domenico Stakes and his victories in the Ladbrokes Vain Stakes, Run To The Rose and the Golden Rose Stakes were simply outstanding. His last two wins have come over Yes Yes Yes and he came out and beat the best sprinters in the country last week in The Everest. The drop back to 1200 metres is ideal and barrier one shouldn’t be an issue as he can make his own luck right on the speed. I am more than happy to back him at the short odds.

Race 8 - 10:00pm

Crown Resorts Handicap (1500m)

Cuba has developed into a fairly consistent galloper and he can help punters finish the night as winners on Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes Night. He recorded two classy wins on the trot in Sydney and he had excuses when he was beaten at Warwick Farm last start. Barrier four is ideal and Nash Rawiller will be able to settle him right on the speed in the early stages of this race.
