The 2020 C.F Orr Stakes is the feature race race of the day at Caulfield this Saturday in what promises to be an excellent day of racing.
The first Group 1 of the new year has attracted an outstanding field of horses including the 2020 Australia Stakes winner Scales Of Justice who heads the market.
Below you can find our 2020 C.F. Orr Stakes Day Preview including our betting suggestions.
Race 1 - 11:35am
The Big Screen Company Handicap (1800m)
I like the placement for King Of Leogrance first up in the opening event of the day at Caulfield. He didn’t break through for his maiden Australian win in his first prep but there was plenty to like about the five year old gelding. He was beaten only a length on debut in the country over 1600m and depending on how forward the horse is, I think he can run a nice race fresh in this grade. It’s worth having a look at how the horse parades and to keep an eye on betting as a guide.

Race 2 - 12:10pm
Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m)
This is a very good edition of the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes with plenty of winning chances. I think Aquitaine represents nice each way value from barrier three with Damian Lane on top. She is a filly that does plenty wrong and tends to lay in down the straight, however she has plenty of ability. She ran an incredible time at Randwick two stars back, which was made even more impressive by the fact that she only find clear running very late in the race. The 1200m is her go and if she isn’t winning, she will go very close.

Race 3 - 12:45pm
Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m)
I think the run of the race out of the Blue Diamond Preview was the Fastnet Rock filly Fresh who was strong right through the line. She won her maiden at Geelong over 1125m by three lengths and I think this distance will suit her better. Jye McNeil did a decent job getting her into a nice position from a tricky gate in the Preview however the wide barrier probably cost her the win. I like the booking of Tim Clark and I’d like to see him be more aggressive from the inside draw as there is no speed whatsoever drawn directly outside him in the BD Fillies Prelude.

Race 4 - 1:20pm
Blue Diamond Prelude C&G (1100m)
There has not been a more impressive debut by a horse this season than Rulership at Randwick a fortnight ago. He settled on the speed and bounded clear leaving his rivals for dead over the 1000m. He ran a much quicker time than Hanseatic did in the Blue Diamond Preview, carried a kilogram more and was eased up on the line. I think he maps to get a lovely run in transit from barrier five with Mark Zahra steering who can find the quickest way home along the fence in front.

Race 5 - 1:55pm
Autumn Stakes (1400m)
It’s hard to ignore the first up run of Adelaide Ace despite it only being a benchmark 64 at Werribee. The Savabeel gelding carried 60.5kg and was three wide the entire trip over the 1400m however he showed an incredible turn of foot late in the race to kick clear by 2.3 lengths on the line. He is a progressive type of horse and whilst I think he will be better over further, he has a fitness edge over a lot of these horses as well as getting in well at the weights.

Race 6 - 2:30pm
Rubiton Stakes (1100m)
This is a nice way to start the campaign for the smart filly Anaheed. She is a multiple Group 2 winning filly who finished her Spring campaign with a third in the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes behind Loving Gaby in the Spring. There looks to be early speed in the race from both outside her (Sartorial Splendour) and inside (Runson) and if Tim Clark can settle in behind them, she can peel out and show her turn of foot late in the race.

Race 7 - 3:10pm
Calyon Cup (1600m)
I’m confident the winner of this race will come from one of my two picks. Odeon has been racing consistently this prep and was very game in defeat last time out at Flemington. Craig Williams will have the gelding in a positive spot from barrier six and be fighting out the finish yet again.
I have a lot of time for the six year old mare Miss Siska and although she may be looking for further later in her prep, I actually think she is suited at the 1600m. She ran really well first up over 1400m last prep in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes to be narrowly beaten by Spanish Whisper at Flemington. She has drawn a tricky gate however if Damian Lane can get to the front, she will also be tough to beat.

Race 8 - 3:50pm
C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m)
Begood Toya Mother is already a Group 1 winner at this track and distance when he took out the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes during the Spring and he maps to get a nice run in behind Scales of Justice and Hey Doc in this. You can forgive his first up run in the Australia Stakes when he pulled out of his run because of the fall and his second-up form is very good.
Kings Will Dream is a legit Group 1 horse and although he will be looking for further, I think he represents good value here. His first up form is betetr than it appears on paper and his effort behind Samadoubt in the Winx Stakes over 1400m last prep was full of merit.

Race 9 - 4:30pm
Bellmaine Stakes (1200m)
Bam’s On Fire looks the one to beat for my eye in the last of the day at Caulfield. She has managed to win four of her 14 race starts to date and has missed the placings only twice in her short career. She carried 60kg to victory in a dominant display at Sandown last start beating home Jumbo Ozaki and she drops 5kgs for that effort here. There looks to be plenty of speed in the race which will set the race up nicely for her and she should have a fitness edge on most of these runners.
