Our second part of the Super Saturday series focuses in on the sprint down the famous Flemington straight.

The Newmarket is run under handicap conditions over the 1200 metres and has produced some high quality performances in its history.

First run in 1874, its honour-roll includes champions such as Bernborough, Placid Ark, Schillaci and Black Caviar win the race.

We’ve run through some of the most memorable wins in the great race.

2011 Black Caviar

It was her 10th career win and arguably her best as Black Caviar broke the weight carrying record for a mare in the race with 58kg’s on her back.

She won the race in a typical canter and was eased down on the line in a complete demolition of her opponents.

She went on to finish her career undefeated and win 25 straight races.

2010 Wanted

A freak storm hit Flemington on Super Saturday in 2010 with water and ice covering the surface, which forced the postponement of the Australian Cup and Guineas.

The Newmarket Handicap was still run and won by Wanted, who had finished second in three Group 1 races before his Newmarket win.

2016 The Quarterback

Black Heart Bart and Chautauqua lined up in the 2016 Newmarket, however it was The Quarterback who flew from last to take out the race.

He would win only one more race before being retired.

2007 Miss Andretti

What a mare she was.

She is the only horse in racing history to simultaneously hold five track records in Australia and England.

Her 2007 Autumn campaigns started with two Group 1 wins in the Lightning Stakes and Australia Stakes before she carried 56kg to win the Newmarket.

She then headed to England where she won the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

2015 Brazen Beau

Three year old colts and geldings have a very good record in the Newmarket.

Brazen Beau was truly dominant in 2015 – beating the likes of Chautauqua, Terravista and Lanken Rupee by three lengths.

2012 Hay List

Hay List’s connections were happy that Black Caviar had been weighted out of the premiere sprint race in 2012.

He had another tough front running horse to run down in Buffering but got there in the shadows of the post to record a much deserved Group 1 victory.

2018 Redkirk Warrior

Redkirk Warrior had a love affair with the Flemington straight and he managed to win back to back Newmarket Handicaps in 2017 and 2018.

He was the first horse since Razor Sharp to go back to back in the race in 1981/82.
