2020 Belmont Newmarket Day Preview

Black type racing returns to Belmont in Perth on Saturday for 2020 Belmont Newmarket Day.

The rail will be set out ten metres around the entire course and the track looks likely to be rated in the Soft range.

*All races previewed in AEST

Race 1 - 1:47pm

Westspeed Platinum Maiden (1400m)

This is an open maiden and a reasonably tough way to begin from a betting perspective, but I’ll be happy to have something small on the third-up Trade Fair Express.

Trade Fair Express clearly needed the run when he finished down the order at Pinjarra when resuming, but returned a far better effort when second last time out.

He is clearly becoming a bit of a non-winner but at around the $5 mark, I’m happy to dip the toe in.

Race 2 - 2:27pm

Long Leaf At Rangeview Stud Plate (1200m)

Clairvoyance has recorded two wins from as many career starts and looks well placed for another on Saturday.

I can’t find one to beat her and at $1.30, she is far too short for me, so I’m happy to watch.

Race 3 - 3:07pm

Amelia Park Lodge Handicap (1400m)

Serenity Bay has returned to the races in excellent form this time and looks the horse to beat in Race 3 on Belmont Newmarket Day.

The Grant & Alana Williams-trained hasn’t finished outside of the places in eleven career starts so far, adding another two wins and two thirds to her record this prep.

Her last-start performance and win was very eye-catching, and a repeat would see her winning again.

Race 4 - 3:47pm

Crown Perth Handicap (2000m)

Prince Turbo has improved with each start back from a spell and is ready to win at Belmont on Saturday.

The Vital Equine gelding finished down the order behind Inspirational Girl at his first two starts this time and was last seen filling the minors behind Fuhrer over a mile here at Belmont.

That form reads well for a race like this, and I think he’ll enjoy getting further out in trip.

Race 5 - 4:23pm

Mrs Mac's Handicap (1650m)

Last-start winner Montelana is fitter fourth-up, drawn well and will have conditions to suit again at Belmont on Saturday.

This is another situation for which I can’t find anything to beat her, but she is too short for me as our $1.60 favourite.

Race 6 - 5:05pm

Happy 60th Birthday Ron Gajewski Handicap (1000m)

Former east coast galloper Super Ex made the perfect start to life in the west with a lovely win here at Belmont just over a week ago, and he can go on with the job on Saturday.

The Excites gelding returned several good efforts and results while under the care of Mark Newnham, and there’s no doubt that he’ll enjoy good improvement into this contest.

Race 7 - 5:45pm

Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m)

Perth’s best sprinters currently in work will step out for this year’s edition of the Belmont Newmarket, including Free Trade.

Free Trade hasn’t been seen at the races since March, but he also doesn’t know how to run a bad race and concluded his last prep with consecutive wins in the Listed Pinjarra Classic and the Listed Bunbury Stakes.

He hasn’t finished worse that second in three previous fresh attempts, and he has trialled exceedingly well in the lead-up to his return.

Race 8 - 6:25pm

Vale Marjorie Charleson Handicap (1200m)

Cliffs Of Comfort ran home well to fill the minors here at Belmont when resuming, and he can return to winning form in Saturday’s penultimate race.

The Canford Cliffs gelding won each of his three starts during his debut prep, and he’s drawn to receive a lovely run on Saturday from barrier 5, and with only 54kgs in tow.

Race 9 - 7:05pm

Go Racing For Free Before The Footy Handicap (1300m)

This is one of the tougher races of the day to analyse from a betting perspective and there is a case to be made for several.

Devoted Star returned a rare flat effort when second-up a fortnight ago, but I am happy to give her another chance at around the $6 mark.

Devoted Star has recorded three wins and two minors from only eight career starts, and returned to the races for an easy win over 1000m here.
