Two of Australia’s premiere boxers will do battle at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville on Wednesday night.
The undefeated Tim Tszyu will be looking to continue his run to the top of the sport when he takes on his biggest challenge to date in the form of the giant killer Jeff Horn.
This is a genuine blockbuster Australian boxing event between two very high class fighters and we have offered our thoughts on both men and ultimately our best betting plays below.
Horn vs Tszyu Betting
Tim Tszyu is the warm favourite to continue his unbeaten run against Jeff Horn on Wednesday night.
He is currently at $1.50 in the market, although he has been easing in with some big bets on Jeff Horn on the weekend.
Those bets on Horn have forced his price in from $2.75 to $2.60 in the last few days will plenty of punters seeing some value for the former WBO Welterweight champion.
We took a $50K bet on Horn to win outright as well as a $10k bet on him to win before the judges are needed.
The punters are torn to whether the fight will go the full 10 rounds, and the most probable outcome from a Method Of Victory point of view is Tim Tszyu by decision at $2.80.
Tszyu is $3.00 to win by KO/TKO/DQ.
On the other side, Horn is currently $4.50 to win by decision and $5.00 to win by KO/TKO/DQ.
Horn vs Tszyu Recent Form
It took a while for Tim Tszyu to follow in his father’s footsteps and take up a professional boxing career but this was mainly due to a hand injury that kept him away from the sport as a youngster.
Once he got rolling, there was no stopping him.
He won the WBC-ABCO Continental Light-Middleweight title in just his seventh pro fight and he has now amassed 15 wins without a single loss.
He retained the IBF Australasian, and WBO Global light-middleweight titles with his best performance to date against the dangerous Jack Brubaker with a fourth round TKO back in December last year.
Jeff Horn has just two losses to his name in his glittering 23 fight career.
One of them was against arguably the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world in Terrence Crawford and the other was against Michael Zerafa, a fight which avenged with a decision win.
In between the aforementioned fights, he dominated Anthony Mundine and finished him in the first round in front of a packed Suncorp Stadium.
How Horn Can Win?
On paper, Horn has lost two of his last four fights which will have many doubting the little Queensland legend but he is just 32 years of age.
Unlike Tszyu, Horn has competed against fighters from all over the world and tested himself against the best.
Simply put, he has the experience and the runs on the board.
There is no doubting the talent of Tszyu but he does not have the experience in the ring against the likes of a Gary Corcoran, Manny Pacquiao or Terrence Crawford.
His most recent fights suggest that he has not slowed down all that much and he can beat Tim Tszyu on the inside and use his wealth of experience to his advantage.
How Tszyu Can Win?
His pace and use of distance.
Tim Tszyu is the younger and quicker fighter and if he uses this to his advantage, he can out point the queenslander over the distance.
He does not want to stand and trade blows with Horn and he must be preempting his counter punching.
His best chance in my opinion is to win a decision and he must use his jab to set up his combinations.
This is a big challenge for the son of a gun and a huge opportunity for him to take that next step on the world stage.
There are a lot of people that are suggesting that Tim Tszyu is the next big hope for Australia on the world boxing stage.
And the betting odds mirror this hope.
This will be the biggest live boxing fight in the world this year with an expected 16,000 in attendance. This is something Horn is used to.
Tim Tszyu may very well be the next big thing in Australian boxing but he has not shown me that he is capable at this level as yet and because we are getting such good odds about a seasoned and proven fighter in Jeff Horn, that is where my money will be.
