2001 – Lions Roar Into Grand Final
The Brisbane Lions were just one more step from the club’s first-ever premiershop with a thumping 68 point win over Richmond at the Gabba in the Preliminary Final at the Gabba.
Brisbane made a strong start to the game, jumping out to a two goal lead at quarter time and the game never looked in doubt.
The 37,000 fans in attendance witnessed the Brisbane Lions at their very best as they charged, eventually finishing up with a 20-16 (136) to Richmond 10-8 (68) victors.
Chris Scott and Nigel Lappin had 29 dispoals, Jonathan Brown kicked four goals and Micheal Voss and Nigel Lappin also kicking 3 goals each.
Brisbane would meet Essendon in the following weeks Grand Final at the MCG.
1991 – Panther Pride
In the second straight year of Raiders v Panthers Grand Final’s – Penrith was able to deny Canberra a threepeat with a 19-12 win in the Winfield Cup Grand Final.
This would be Penrith’s first premiership since joining the competition in 1967.
Mark Gyer was famously sin binned for calling referee Bill Harrigan “a cheat” but the Panthers got the job done with Roce Simmonds scoring two tries steering Penrith to premiership glory in his final game.
It would be a big night for Phil Gould and his men.
