2020 Underwood Stakes Day Preview

The Group 1 Underwood Stakes is the feature race on the card at Caulfield this Saturday but there is plenty of quality racing right across the afternoon.

Our full 2020 Underwood Stakes Day Preview can be viewed below.

Race 1 - 12:45pm

Glynn Bramich Memorial (1100m)

How Womantic seems almost bomb proof having won five of her six career race starts to date.

She looked like she was going to be run over late first up at The Valley but she found a little bit more when asked to narrowly hold on from the talented Parmie.

Caulfield has been a happy hunting ground for the lightly raced mare with two wins from two starts and she will again land somewhere on the speed and it will take a good one to get past her.

Race 2 - 1:20pm

MRC RMHC Pin & Win Handicap (1400m)

Rainbow Thief returned an even effort behind Showmanship first up at The Valley at Listed level but he will appreciate the step up in distance here.

The five year old gelding has only had the 11 career starts but he is more than capable of producing a rating high enough to be competitive in a race of this quality.

Race 3 - 1:55pm

Peter Comley Handicap (2000m)

I’m happy to take on the short priced favourite in this race and I’m going very wide with the Tasmanian White Hawk at around the $90 mark.

The seven year old gelding has won 10 of his 47 career race starts including his last start at Devonport by three lengths.

He drops down in weight for this assignment and is better suited over the 2000m.

1/2 E/W White Hawk

Race 4 - 2:30pm

Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m)

Alfa Oro is scratch from the race after coming out and winning impressively at The Valley on Friday night.

Order Of Command will be asked to carry the big weight in this contest but he is a classy sprinter who is more than capable of winning this race fresh.

Race 5 - 3:10pm

Here For The Horses Handicap (1400m)

I have a huge amount of time for this progressive five year old gelding.

Buffalo River has won six of his 10 career race starts including his last two before going for a spell.

He is a horse that performs best when fresh and I love the fact they are starting his campaign over the 1400m at Caulfield which will suit him nicely.

Race 6 - 3:50pm

Group 3 Neds Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m)

I thought the run of Prague down the Flemington straight first up was full of merit.

He was beaten only a length by Doubtland that day and he will appreciate the step up in distance for this assignment.

Flying Award was absolutely bottling home late in the McNeil Stakes at this track first up and another 10 meters and he wins!

He split Immortal Love and Tagaloa in that race which is the form lines that I want to be following going forward into the spring.

Race 7 - 4:30pm

Instant Celebrity looks a very good filly in the making having won all three of her career race starts in Adelaide including the Listed Oaklands Plate over 1400m.

She showed her turn of foot first up at Morphettville when she chased down the leader when she finally found clear running in the straight.

The daughter of Not A Single Doubt will need the pace on as she gets right back in running but her class will carry her a long way.

Race 8 - 5:05pm

Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m)

This is not the strongest edition of the Group 1 Underwood Stakes I have ever seen and it does seem Russian Camelot has the race all but won to my eye.

He was excellent when narrowly beaten by one of the best 1600m horses in the country, Fierce Impact, in the Mayke Diva Stakes and he will only improve on that effort.

There’s only nine horses to navigate around and with even luck from a tricky gate, he will be winning.

Race 9 - 5:45pm

Evergreen Turf Handicap (1700m)

Nonconformist is yet to miss a place from seven career race starts including a fast finishing third first up behind I Am Superman at this track.

The lightly raced four year old gelding has three wins to his name by a combined 11 lengths including a dominant win in the Alister Clark Stakes over 2040m at The Valley last prep.

The son of Rebel Raider will appreciate the sharp step up in trip for this assignment and this looks a really winnable race for him.
