1996 – Saintly Wins the Cox Plate

From our “Greatest Cox Plates” blog:

Before Makybe Diva, the last horse to win the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in the same year was Saintly.

The Horse From Heaven was beaten in both the Craven Plate and The Metropolitan – not typical Caulfield Cup lead-up races- but Bart Cummings was confident that Saintly would be able to take out the Australasian Weight-For-Age Championship.

As usual, Bart was correct and Saintly was able to take out the Cox Plate in a thrilling four way finish before he recorded one of the softest wins in the history of the Melbourne Cup just over a week later.

1984 – Jordan’s NBA Debut

A young man by the name of Michael Jordan played his first NBA game for the Chicago Bulls on this day in 1984.

The Bulls had a 103-92 win over the Washington Bullets in Chicago.

Jordan scored 16 points and was 5 for 16 from the field, and 6 of 7 from the line.

Many suspect this kid might be something some day.
