2009 – Monaco Consul wins Victoria Derby

Kiwi trainer Mike Moroney celebrated his second Victoria Derby win when New Zealand Stallion Monoco Consul completed an Australian Group 1 double with a victory at Flemington.

Moroney had brought the horse over to Australia a month prior to contest the Spring Championship Stakes on a heavy track at Randwick and won.

With a firm belief that only horses from across the ditch have only two good runs in them, Moroney waited until the Derby to give him another run and it delivered.

His previous winner in the time-honoured Group 1 Melbourne Cup Carnival race was Second Comming back in 1997.

2004 – Pats Streak Ends

The New England Patriots record 21-game winning streak came to an end when they were beaten 34-20 at Pittsburgh.

The Steelers would score 21 points in the first quarter, rushing back for 221 yeards and sacked New England’s quarterback Tom Brady four times.

It would be the Patriots first defeat since going down to Washington 17-20 in September 2003.
