European Football Preview – January 16

Football around Europe continues to plough on in the New Year and after our own little festive break, we are back to find value across some non-English leagues.

There are big matches aplenty and we have honed in on Germany, France and Italy this weekend as to where the best bets are.

Inter Milan and Juventus is easily the feature match from the continent but that’s just one of five plays we’ve found.

Read on to see who we are backing.

Wolfsburg Vs RB Leipzig

Sunday 17 January, 1:30am, Volkswagen Arena

Both of these sides dropped points in their most recent outings but this is still setting up as an excellent contest between two sides with Champions League ambitions.

In the Bundesliga last season they drew both of their meetings and there is value to be had backing another one here.

Wolfsburg has the second highest number of draws in the Bundesliga with seven and they match up with Leipzig very well.

Considering the visitors will be somewhat shorthanded with a lengthy injury list, there is something holding both sides back when it comes to giving the edge one way or another.

Angers Vs PSG

Sunday 17 January, 7:00am, Stade Raymond-Kopa

Maurico Pochettino has barely been in the PSG job for a week and he has already delivered the club a trophy, winning the French Super Cup 2-1 over Marseille during the week.

Up next is an Angers team that has overachieved significantly this season, currently in seventh place and looking at overtaking the clubs ahead of them rather than consolidating their position.

This is not going to be one of those matches where they make up ground, PSG have already thumped them 6-1 back in October and should win this fixture quite comfortably.

Bayern Munich Vs Freiberg

Monday 18 January, 1:30am, Allianz Arena

Get ready for a motivated, frustrated and above all else angry Bayern Munich team.

They were eliminated from the DFB Pokal during the week while admittedly fielding a slightly understrength side but at that club, any loss prompts a crisis.

Especially when it follows a 3-2 Bundesliga defeat to Monchengladbach.

Up next is an in form Freiberg side that has won five of its last six and is starting to find its scoring touch, netting 12 goals in their last three victories.

Bayern’s backline has hardly been impenetrable, and we should be in for a real show here.

I’ll back the hosts to come away with a win, but they may have to score three or four here.

Back Bayern to Win and Over 4.5 Goals @ $2.75

Atalanta Vs Genoa

Monday 18 January, 4:30am, Gewiss Stadium

Atalanta is up to fifth place in Serie A and look like good value to get back into the top four by the end of this weekend.

Sitting on a three-match winning run and a nine match unbeaten run in all competitions dating back to the end of November, they should be able to have a bit of fun against Genoa here.

In their last five victories they have scored at least three goals and I’m happy to back their trend of high scoring matches to continue here.

Back Atalanta to Win & Over 3.5 Goals @ $2.35

Inter Milan Vs Juventus

Monday 18 January, 6:45am, San Siro

In a weekend filled with excellent matches all across Europe, this has to be one of, if not the best on offer.

Inter looks like a legitimate title contender this season after finishing last season as runner up to this weekend’s opponents.

With both teams looking up at AC Milan they will not want to concede any ground in the title race however this is another one where the draw is where the value lies.
