European Football Preview – April 17

Another huge weekend of European football awaits us, headlined by the Copa Del Rey Final in Spain and an Old Firm Derby in the Scottish Cup.

We’ve scoured the continent for our five best bets and have them below.

Read on and see who we are backing here.

Monchengladbach Vs Frankfurt

Saturday 17 April, 11:30pm, Borussia Park

Wolfsburg taking on Bayern might be the best match of the weekend in terms of the standings but there’s a lot to like about this fixture too.

The hosts find themselves four points out of a Europa League place with eight matches to play, while the visitors have a seven point cushion as they try to hold on to a Champions League place.

When these teams faced off in December it was a wild 3-3 draw and plenty of signs are pointing towards that outcome again.

Gladbach is on a three match unbeaten run since their European campaign ended last month while Frankfurt is outscoring its struggling defence, tallying 11 goals in their last three matches.

Frankfurt will throw everything they have at the hosts but they have the attacking firepower to match their rivals.

Athletic Bilbao Vs Barcelona

Sunday 18 April, 5:30am, Estadio de La Cartuja

Both sides qualified for the Copa Del Rey Final in very dramatic circumstances, needing extra time in the second leg of their respective Semi Finals to advance.

What that means is we will see two sides more than capable of holding their nerves in the pressure packed situation of playing for a trophy.

Despite a horrendous start to the season, Barcelona has responded well and brings some good domestic form into this fixture, El Clasico defeat notwithstanding.

What is really troubling for Bilbao is the fact they have not won in their last six matches, scoring three goals in that time.

It’s not ideal when you have Lionel Messi up next and because Bilbao can’t score, there’s only one team I can see winning this in 90 minutes.

SGM: Lionel Messi First Goalscorer and Barcelona to Win (90 Minutes) @ $4.08

Osasuna Vs Elche

Sunday 18 April, 10:00pm, Estadio El Sadar

The good news for Osasuna is they are in a great position to record back to back wins, taking on relegation battlers Elche.

They won their first match in over a month with a 2-1 defeat of Villareal and have rightfully been installed as favourites in this market.

Elche has taken just 10 points from 16 La Liga matches since New Years Day and finds itself one point off safety.

Defending has been a real issue for Elche and the hosts should see this as an opportunity to work on the sharpness of their strikers.

Considering the visitors have not kept a La Liga clean sheet since December 7, I’ll back Osasuna to score at least two goals in a victory.

Back Osasuna to Win & Over 1.5 Goals @ $2.63

Rangers Vs Celtic

Monday 19 April, 12:00am, Ibrox

The Quarter Finals of the Scottish Cup provide us with another Old Firm Derby as Rangers look to continue their magical season.

Having already won the Premiership, breaking their hated rival’s stranglehold on the trophy, they will now look to remove the Cup from Celtic’s trophy cabinet for the first time in five years.

Rangers have dominated recent meetings with Celtic winning three of the last four and there is no reason to expect a change in form.

Their lone domestic defeat in 2020 came in December and you would be foolish to back anything other than a Rangers victory in 90 minutes here.

It has been a special season at Ibrox and it should continue here.

Back Rangers to Win (90 Minutes) @ $2.75

Atletico Madrid Vs Eibar

Monday 19 April, 12:15am, Estadio Wanda Metropolitano

It’s a fairly simple prospect for Atletico here, defeat last placed Eibar and they will stay on top of the La Liga table for another week.

Their recent form of three wins from their last 11 matches is not exactly a ringing endorsement of their chances here but such is the plight of Eibar, I’ll still back the hosts to come away with all three points.

Eibar’s last La Liga victory came on January 4 with a grand total of four points since then.

It might not be pretty but Atletico should have no trouble outclassing their opponent in this one.

Back Atletico to Win -1 Goal @ $2.30
