2021 Wangoom Handicap Day Preview

How good is the Bool? Day 2 of the Warrnambool racing carnival continues this Wednesday afternoon and our full 2021 Wangoom Handicap Day Preview can be read below.

Race 1 - 11:20am

Maiden Plate (1400m)
Next Step Berrima finished third on debut at Geelong, one length behind the winner Sun Samurai over 1200m. He will appreciate the step up in distance to 1400m for this assignment and the blinkers go on for the first time.

Race 2 - 11:50am

3YO Maiden Plate (1700m)
Sly Corner has been to the races on five occasions and while he hasn’t broken through for his maiden race win, he has been competitive in all of them. The son of Savabeel has run second in both his starts so far this prep and the step up to 1700m should be ideal at his third run.

Race 3 - 12:20pm

Maiden Plate (1700m)
Themagicneverends is yet to break through for his maiden race win in 13 career starts but his first up effort at Terang proved he is not far away. He finished less than a length away from the winner in that race and will take plenty of benefit from the run. The four year old gelding has proven that he handles the strong out of the track and the step up in distance suits.

Race 4 - 12:55pm

Benchmark 120 Steeplechase (3450m)
Michelin is a veteran of 53 career race starts with three of them being over the jumps for one win and a third. The nine year old has had two starts and FIVE barrier trials so far this prep but is only now getting out to a more suitable distance. His record on rain effected going is superb and he represents good each way value at his current price.

Race 5 - 1:30pm

Benchmark 70 Handicap (1000m)
Dinga was excellent when resuming at Cranbourne, beaten less than a length over 1000m. He is unbeaten in two starts second up from a spell and he is proven in the wet. He drops three kilos on that first up effort and will take plenty of benefit from that run.

Race 6 - 2:05pm

Galleywood Hurdle (3200m)
Saunter Boy has had three starts over the hurdles for two wins and a second. One of those wins came for the grey gelding at his last start at Pakenham over this distance by 2.8 lengths and he drops down 3.5kgs for this assignment. He is clearly the horse to beat and my best of the day.
5 Units Saunter Boy

Race 7 - 2:45pm

Benchmark 64 Handicap (1700m)
The Peter Moody trained Facemask has been building into his races so far this prep and was beaten less than a length at Pakenham at his third run two weeks ago. He should be nearing peak fitness at this stage in his prep now and despite the awkward barrier, represents some value in an open race. Has handled the wet track previously so that should not be an issue.

Race 8 - 3:20pm

Listed Wangoom Handicap (1200m)
There is no way I’m letting Jungle Edge go around at these odds and not having something on each way with the rain around. His price always fluctuates in betting and this race has been no exception but if the rain continues, you know he will shorten. Great Again was very consistent throughout his prep last time in, and he finished his prep with placings in both the Bletchingly Stakes and Aurie’s Star. He has managed 10 wins from 26 career starts and three of those have been first up from a spell.

Race 9 - 4:00pm

Benchmark 70 Handicap (1400m)
Tadashi Hamada has one win from four starts and been unplaced just once in his short career. The three year old gelding resumed from a spell with a promising second at Geelong where he was beaten less than a length and he drops 2.5kgs for this assignment. The step in distance in an advantage as is barrier three.

Race 10 - 4:30pm

Benchmark 70 Handicap (1400m)
Nikau Spur could not have been much more impressive when winning by 3.8 lengths on the soft at Pakenham first up. The lightly raced four year old is clearly a talented individual and there has been plenty of early market support suggesting he is ready to win again. This doesn’t look much harder than his first up win.
