The Brownlow Bubble: AFL Round 9

This year’s Brownlow Medal market is quickly turning into a fascinating race with Christian Petracca, Dustin Martin, Marcus Bontempelli, and Travis Boak all headlining the top of the market at single-figure odds.

The last few weeks have been all about the Dees, but we’re beginning to see a couple of Port Adelaide players surge towards the top, top, top of the betting.

Travis Boak continues to poll well week in and week out, while Ollie Wines has been a major firmer following the Power’s big win in The Showdown last week.

With two months’ worth of footy in the books, find out who sits on top of our Brownlow Big Board, as well as who we voted for last week, in another edition of The Brownlow Bubble.

Travis Boak – $9.00

Boak has remained steady at $9.00 over the last few weeks, but as you can tell by our leaderboard, he’s really starting to get a move on towards the top.

Last week saw Boak finish with 28 disposals and six clearances in The Showdown against the Crows, while he also quietly ranks third in total goal assists and seventh in centre clearances.

Like a few of Melbourne’s favourites, the 32-year-old will be fighting for votes all season against Ollie Wines, but so long as he continues to do the little things right, he’s well on his way to at least another Top 3 finish.

Ollie Wines – $23.00 – $13.00

As already mentioned, Wines and Boak look set to battle for votes all season, but it looks as though the bookies are finally starting to take Port’s star midfielder seriously with his price firming significantly on a weekly basis.

Wines had a bit of a quiet game compared to his usual standards against the Crows last week, but the fact he’s put up 30 disposals or more on five occasions already this season suggests he’s  going to be in the Brownlow fight to the finish.

The 26-year-old finished with 18 disposals and a goal last year when the Power played the Dogs, so look for another big performance in Saturday’s blockbuster at the Adelaide Oval.

Andrew Gaff – $41.00

If you’re searching for a player to back at odds, look no further than Andrew Gaff.

He’s been on a tear over the last couple of weeks with back-to-back 35+ disposal games against the Dockers and Hawks, but that still hasn’t been enough to make the bookies budge.

To be fair, Gaff can run hot and cold at times, and he did flash some Brownlow potential around this time last year before cooling off.

With the Eagles facing a very winnable game against the Crows this week in Perth however, there’s a strong chance he polls well for a third straight game.
