Champion status is reluctantly given out in Australia.
In recent times, it took one of the greatest of all time, Winx, for us to step back and appreciate what we were seeing.
In a post Winx era, we’ve had a handful of brilliant horses that are worthy of champion status, despite the ongoing debate.
Since the beginning of the Spring, there has been an interesting debate about the status of Verry Elleegant.
Is she, or is she not a champion?
We thought she was before the Melbourne Cup, but she well and truly put that debate to bed with an emphatic four length victory.
Consider her resume, she has won 10 Group 1’s, all in different events ranging from 1400m right up to the 3200m Melbourne Cup.
She’s a champion beyond doubt.
The Autumn Sun
This one might be controversial, but you have to believe what the eye is telling you.
If this bloke was still doing his best work on the race track, he’d be competing in Cox Plates in the Spring and Queen
Elizabeth’s in the Autumn, while likely starting as a short priced favourite in all likelihood.
He was only seen on the race track eight times for seven wins, including five Group 1 victories.
A true 2yo/3yo season champion.
Hopefully he’s a champion at stud.
The much loved enigma of our sprinting ranks might go down every now and then at a short quote,
however he has become a world class sprinter over the last couple of years.
His CV boasts Group 1 victories in The Galaxy, Moir Stakes, Darley Sprint, The Lightning Stakes & 2 x TJ Smith Stakes. Pop an Everest victory on top of that, and you have a champion who’s earnt over $15 million.
Give him strength on Saturday.
What a guy.
A modern day champion who is an all time legend.
The fire is still in the belly for Ollie, and if the pandemic has taught us one thing, it’s that Ollie can roar the home!
Check out this for a CV: 3x Melbourne Cups, 4x Caulfield Cups, 2x Cox Plates, and a Golden Slipper as a cherry on top.
He’s on 126 Group 1 wins and counting, an absolute champion.
Who else should have champion status Drifters?
