Caulfield - Race 5 2:25pm AEST

No. 5 Royal Crown

We’re getting a nice price for Royal Crown in what is a very open race.

The son of Helmet doesn’t win out of turn, but he should be in peak fitness coming off a fairly luckless run at Sandown last week where he was held up down the straight.

He’s won on a couple of occasions here at Caulfield and should appreciate the wet ground three wins on soft going to his name. Daniel Stackhouse jumps in the saddle for the first time and the pair map to get a lovely run off the speed.

Randwick - Race 8 3:25pm AEST

No. 12 Jojo Was A Man

Jojo Was A Man is the rightful favourite heading into the Winter Challenge.

John Thompson’s four-year-old beat all bar Taksu in the Winter Stakes a fortnight ago where he was forced to switched to the inside in the run home. He hit a flat spot 200m out, but still managed to put pressure on the winner in a lunge for the line.

He was an impressive back-to-back winner leading into that start and also won on heavy going at Canterbury earlier in his prep. Drawn well with no weight on his back, he’ll be hard to hold out.

Caulfield - Race 8 4:20pm AEST

No. 10 Mariamia

There’s a strong case to be made for Mariamia in this year’s Bletchingly Stakes.

The daughter of Toronado stuck on well under pressure for fourth in the Civic Stakes at Randwick last month where she just lacked the toe to grab a place. She’s since had a trial at Warwick Farm to keep her sharp, while she also ran well over this track and distance when third to Probabeel in the Bellmaine Stakes during the autumn.

Her wet-track form is good, and the booking of Jamie Kah only strengthens her chances.

Belmont - Race 8 6:20pm AEST

No. 7 The Spruiker

A wet track is expected at Belmont on Saturday, and that should suit The Spruiker in the Bolton Sprint.

The Stephen Wolfe-trained four-year-old resumed last month over the track and distance, making up good ground from out wide carrying plenty of extra weight.

He’s one of the few with wet-track form to his name, while he also boasts three wins from three starts second-up.
