Showtime Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl for the fifth time in six seasons.

There are not many players in the NFL who have experienced a greater level of success through their first five years in the league than Mahomes.

His list of accolades includes (but is not limited to) three NFL MVP awards, three Lombardi Trophies, a pair of Super Bowl MVPs, and a litany of passing titles and hours of highlight reels.

On the field, Mahomes is the face of the league, but away from the turf of the gridiron, he remains a very interesting and complex character.

Here are 10 Things You Didn’t Know About the NFL’s most exciting gunslinger.

1. He Was Robbed at Gunpoint

Mahomes was robbed only two weeks following the NFL Draft by a man who pulled into the driveway of a friend’s house brandishing a gun.

Mahomes and three of his buddies were out catching a baseball game at the University of Texas before being confronted by a 34-year-old man armed with a handgun.

Nobody was hurt, but the man did manage to steal several items from the group but was eventually found and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

2. His Father Pitched in the Majors

Mahomes is named after his father Pat, who spent 11 seasons playing Major League Baseball for the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Mahomes, a pitcher, was drafted in the sixth round of the 1988 amateur draft. He made 63 starts compiling a 5.47 ERA and a 42-39 win/loss record.

3. Mitch Trubisky Was Drafted Ahead of Him

This one keeps Bears fans up at night.

If you’re a part-time NFL fan or simply a little behind on the history of Mahomes, it might come as a surprise to learn he was drafted with the 10th pick in the 2017 Draft – eight spots after Mitch Trubisky was selected by the Bears.

Mahomes is the Chiefs undisputed starter for as long as he wants to be, while Trubisky did not receive a second contract and has spent the last two seasons as a backup in Buffalo and Pittsburgh.

4. He Was Drafted in the 37th Round of the 2014 MLB Draft

With baseball in his veins and football in his heart, Mahomes originally had the choice between following in his dad’s footsteps or choosing the game he truly loved.

As a senior in high school, Mahomes threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts, but that still wasn’t enough to stop his fourth-round free fall before finally landing with the Detroit Tigers in 2014.

Mahomes told Jimmy Fallon earlier in the year that the Tigers rang him immediately, saying nothing other than “We’ll see you in three years.” Mahomes chose not to sign, however, instead choosing to fulfil his commitment to Texas Tech.

5. He’s Married to his High School Sweetheart

Mahomes makes up one half of a dynamic NFL power couple that has captured headlines for the last two years.

Brittany Mahomes, his high school sweetheart and now wife, has notably made her presence felt at Chiefs games this year by screaming loudly (and a little obnoxiously) in favour of her man.

Aside from being what many might call “Insta famous”, Matthews is also a former professional soccer player.

Now retired, Brittany played college soccer at Texas Tech later went on to play in Iceland and is still involved in the world game, with the couple owning a stake in the Kansas City Current.

6. He Is Basically Kermit the Frog

8. He Can Hoop

9. And Send It

Golf is a popular offseason hobby for many athletes and Patrick Mahomes is no exception.

He’s apparently beaten his old man only once, but he still manages to find a way to make golf look ridiculously easy.

10. He’s A Very Rich Man

After helping the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title in half a century, the team executives decided the best thing to do would be to tie their man down long term.

As soon as he was eligible to receive a big money extension, Mahomes inked a 10 year extension worth at least $US477m but probably more by the time all is said and done.

There may not be a more pleasing sight than when those direct deposits started hitting his bank account.

Not that he was exactly shopping at the dollar store beforehand, his rookie deal was a four year, US$16m payout which he’d played three years of and been paid around $13.5m of it.

Just to be nice, the Chiefs just tacked the half billion dollar extension onto the end of it.

If you ever find yourself out for dinner with Mahomes, he’s definitely expected to pick up the bill at the end of the night.
